Knee injury

I've done something to my knee. I was sitting down and my foot slid forward. Sudden excruciating pain in the back of my knee, to the left hand side of my left knee. I went clammy and nearly vomited from the pain. Pain has subsided if I'm resting, but knee feels kind of "throbby". There's a bulge at the back of the joint. If I put weight on it I get sharp pain if I don't walk straight on a flat surface. Any ideas what I've done?

I'm feeling very sorry for myself. OOH think I need a scan to see what's going on and can either get referred via the GP physio service or by going private - I have BUPA via work.

It sounds like you might have hurt your knee in a similar way to what happened to me. I had a sudden, sharp pain in the back of my knee after a strange movement, and like you, I felt nauseous from the intensity of it. In my case, the pain decreased at rest but increased with movement, and I also noticed swelling in the back of the joint. It turned out to be a Baker's cyst that had ruptured, causing fluid to spread into the surrounding tissue. However, other possibilities, such as a meniscus tear or ligament strain, could also explain your symptoms, so getting a proper diagnosis is definitely the right decision.
When I went through this, I saw Pablo Gelber, a knee specialist who recommended an MRI to get a clear picture of the injury. Based on the results, we discuss different treatment options, including physical therapy and specific exercises to regain stability and strength. If you have BUPA through work, going private could speed up the process and get you the answers you need sooner. Either way, try to rest and avoid pushing it too hard until you know exactly what's going on. I hope you get some relief soon!

It sounds like you may have dislocated it. Off to A&E you go!
