At least your DC didn't do this today

Whatever else your kids managed to break today, at least it wasn't a 3,500-year old cultural artifact. I hope.

The jar smashed into pieces on display

Boy accidentally smashes 3,500-year-old jar on museum visit

It was on display near the entrance of the museum without glass when the accident happened.

Gosh I thought it was bad enough when my DCs aged nearly 2 and nearly 4 broke a massive lamp in a smart hotel. (When we told the hotel, expecting an extra charge in our room, they instead offered us a replacement lamp 🤣)

StarSlinger · 27/08/2024 18:59

Oh dear. They need to send it to The Repair Shop.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2024 19:06

Good attitude by the museum. It's a shame when something like this happens, but I hope the conservators enjoy their 3d jigsaw puzzle.

Drippycandle · 27/08/2024 19:45

It’s a good attitude from the museum and infinitely better than things being kept in storage for years never to be seen.
I often wonder though if theres an argument in this country to be had for the type of insurance they have in Germany , which covers a child breaking things!

hoarahloux · 27/08/2024 20:04

Sounds like a lovely museum responding to a genuine accident.

At least they're not these parents! The video shows the kids totally unsupervised, running around and pulling on the sculpture. I originally thought the parent(s) were in the room but those seem to be just other visitors!

What were the museum thinking of, leaving it lying about?

Singleandproud · 27/08/2024 21:28

One of my best friends projectile vomited all over some ancient Egyptian (I think) doors whilst on a school trip to the British Museum... 30 years ago and the only school trip I really remember.

ZorbaTheHoarder · 27/08/2024 21:28

At least it wasn't new - it would have cost a fortune to replace!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 27/08/2024 21:31

Are we going to have to invade somewhere for a replacement?

Augustisnearlydonesogoodbyesun · 27/08/2024 21:32

At least the bairn had a smashing time....

SpeakfromExperience · 27/08/2024 21:45

That's absolutely mortifying, on the parents part. Why can't parents supervise their children adequately in places that they're well aware will have irreplaceable artefacts? This wasn't a child bumping in to it, he was bloody pulling on it. Child doesn't know better - but parent does!

Don't know what the museum are thinking either not having them behind glass. These things are supposed to be 'look, don't touch'. They've responded in a very nice way, good on them. But honestly, is nothing sacred?

Are we going to have to invade somewhere for a replacement?

Do you know where Haifa (the location of the museum) is, or where the eastern Mediterranean coast (where the jar was found) is, or where these two places are in relation to each other?

mondaytosunday · 27/08/2024 21:59

We visited an old friend of my DH in Australia who had these expensive aboriginal sculptures- my three year old son knocked one over. It broke. OMG. Afraid I don't know what happened after I've blocked it from my memory bank!

LucasNorth1 · 27/08/2024 22:27

Omg

Scirocco · 27/08/2024 22:44

Bit of superglue and it'll be good as new.
