Carvery hygiene. Feel sick!

Went for a carvery today at a place I've not been before.
The man serving the carvery had really long fingernails with dirt underneath them all.
He had his fingers all over the plate when he was holding it putting the food on, and then his thumb about an inch onto the plate as he was handing it to me.
I really didn't want to eat it, but I paid £12 and felt like I couldn't exactly say "can someone else come and dish up my food"
I will admit that I have a germ phobia, but was I being over the top? It's probably all in my head, but I feel really queasy now.

We went for a celebration on Saturday evening. One toilet F and one M in the whole place. DH saw one of the waiters leave without flushing the fucking toilet. You’d have to wonder if he’d washed his hands after. We left before dessert. Never again 🤮

I agree that he should have been wearing gloves to serve the food, but if that worries you, I would be far more concerned about what happens out of sight in the kitchen in almost all restaurants, especially if you send your food back for any reason.

Was there a test done on the salad bar in one of those places, and there were 97 different samples of piss.

I might be remembering it wrong

Probably a lot worse hygiene had happened that you didn't see OP. It's not the best but you'll be in contact with a lot of stuff that your body will cope with just fine. A lot of people have grim hygiene. 😬

@Heedthaball a curry house in Tooting. They also cocked up DH’s food. He asked for the lamb chops as literally the only thing on the menu without onions. Voila! Presented on a bed of fricking onions. He had chosen the same for mains, and it came in the same style. After he’d told the server. Absolutely disgusting. I should get round to writing a review or something.

I hate to say it, but the same thing could be happening in the kitchen of any restaurant - it's just that you see it in a carvery.

Exactly. At least you get to see what's going on in front if your eyes 👀 at the carvery.

Worse stuff could be going on in the kitchens behind closed doors at an ordinary restaurant 🙃

A lot wear gloves and never change them. Frequently washed hands are better. Also, I’ve seen staff going to the loo wearing their aprons which will get grossly contaminated. It does put me off eating out. Do they go on hygiene courses, then do their own thing?

Yes it is gross. Although if you've ever eaten anything processed or out of a packet, or that you didn't grow, harvest and cook yourself, or in a cafe or restaurant, you've likely eaten something that's been handled in a way that isn't 100% hygienic.

I once watched a barmaid clean under her nails with the lemon knife ( the slices that go on your drink) whilst picking at her teeth on the bar whilst ignoring customers

Thistooshallpass24 · 27/08/2024 20:07

Also at another pub, their own chef wasn't allowed in the bar for an after work drink because he smelled so bad and you could almost taste his trainers! This was when you could still smoke in pubs!
