Housing register final offer

Hi. I received a final offer from the council for a property as going to be homeless as my landlord is selling the property where I live. They told me I do not have the three options because of the homeless factor. Basically the property I was offered is 45 min walk from the school bus stop for my son and I do not drive. There is 1 local bus only but is unreliable. They said he can move school and so on but this is not possible. What are the chances if I reject it that they will kick me off the council house register and cannot bid for more properties. My landlord said I can stay another year as he felt sorry for me as a single mum.

Being homeless will be much more disruptive to your son than moving school ever will be

Agree with this. In the current climate, priority number one has to be a secure roof over your head.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/08/2024 18:12

Take the offer. You won't get a second chance.

The local authority may pay the deposit (as a loan) to a private landlord and act as the guarantor?

Do you have knowledge of nearer schools for your son, it’s possible that his needs could be met in a different school, as well as the one he goes to now. You could also apply for an EHCNA.

If it's a final offer that's exactly what it means. Not accepting it might well mean you lose your priority on the housing register. You might never get another offer, if you become homeless in future then what will happen? Do you think being in temporary accommodation will be a good move for your son?
I used to work as a homeless officer and I've lost count of people who refused offers and then regretted it. People always thought that if they refused then something better would appear. When it didn't, it was too late. I would always say, half a cake is better than none.

Could you use the difference in rent and put it towards travel?

Driving lessons to eventually get a car orvtaxis when whether is bad and use the 45 minute walk as exercise, talking and decompression time?

Accept it. Push for a taxi. How old is Ds?

@NewGreenDuck is this how it works? I would not be able to go on the register ever again? would not be able to bid for properties if I reapply after they remove me? This information is not accessible online and I genuinely have no friends or family in council properties and no-one to ask.

You can't depend on being able to stay on the list and bid for more properties. In my area if you reject a property that's it, no second offers. Social housing is like gold dust and there's plenty of people wanting to snap them up. I think it would be foolish to turn it down, even though the transport and schooling situation is not ideal.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 27/08/2024 20:32

Accept the offer and immediately apply for a review. This explains it.

If you don't accept it and then find yourself homeless ,the council could find that you're intentionally homeless and refuse to house you at all.

Longer term housing could be a council or housing association home or a private rented home. You should accept the offer even if you want to ask for a review

I would stay another year and go through the same process, you might get lucky second time around. If you speak to the council they will close your case and offer it to someone else.
You won't burn your bridges. Get a year contract though. Don't rely on a verbal agreement.

My son is autistic and we worked really hard with the school to make suitable arrangements for him. He is hurting himself when he feels unsafe. If he needs to move school both of us will have to go through a nightmare which might be long term. I can see that I am getting close on other bids it is just this one that is in a rural area outside of the town where I live. It is literally in a forest.

Apply for the transport.

The council could refuse to help in a year. I've seen it happen before.

If your son is 11 is he not able to change school anyway?

is it not possible for him to walk to bus stop?

VividSwan · 04/10/2024 16:56

Hi I am currently in the same situation as yours, can you advise me ?

frozendaisy · 04/10/2024 17:25

Take the house.

The rent will be lower and secure.

You might be able to afford taxis without the additional rent.
