Fuck This House - what has your house recently done to screw you over?

So this evening we realised that the bathroom has a slow leak and has been very quietly pissing water down the wall behind the bath that has now affected downstairs. When we investigated behind the bath panel there is a wall of black mould so this must have been going on for months 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

We also have a leaking downstairs toilet as well and can we find a tradesman who will actually provide us with a quote after inspection …… no we cant!! 😡

OP where do you live? If your water company is severn trent then they will fix your leaking toilet for free unless its the type where the cistern is built into the wall.

Someone came out and fixed two of ours last week. Zero cost, appointment within a week and they also gave us a free water saving shower head.

In case it's useful to anyone, Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water offers a similar service.

Slugs in my bedroom ( bungalow), had them a couple of years ago and thought that my defences of copper mesh and egg shells stuffed in gap between skirting board and underfloor space had been successful!

They are small, thin slugs, not the big juicy ones I see in the garden and I think they are coming from the 5ft of floor space under my bungalow. It is designed to take excess ground water and has an earth floor for the water to drain away slowly. I think the slugs could be breeding under there!

So it’s back to using a foul smelling spray of natural products that slugs allegedly don’t like along the edge of the carpet every evening and sleeping with a light on. When I looked under the bed, a wooden frame so easy to check, I saw so many slug trails it looked like they had been having a party down there!

They started appearing this week and I’ve removed three since then.

I’ve eliminated many previous damp problems with extra air bricks and a positive air exchange unit in the hall ceiling but just can’t seem to get rid of the bloody slugs!

I have just spent the afternoon fighting with a leaking dishwasher. Our drains were blocked so we have poured down mr muscle and tons of hot water. Then I had the bright idea of putting the dishwasher on to test it all out. Copious amounts of water and foam plus two broken mops later I have emptied the dishwasher and checked the filter. It was covered in disgusting stuff which I have now cleaned off.

Moral of the story is to always have mr muscle in the cupboard and to clean the dishwasher filter more often!

Well, I didn't fix the ball valve in the cistern today, as we did a tip trip instead.

Better give it a miss tomorrow, as it's our anniversary, so up to my elbow is cistern may not go down well.

Will do it Thursday, along with painting the wall in the kitchen, as the OH got rambunctious with a teabag and stained the wall, oh and the wall that's got a Prosecco stain up it, after opening a "fully armed" bottle (OH again!!). So I may as well paint the whole kitchen!!

Living the dream on annual leave!!!

Oh, I recently had the "wtf is that on the kitchen ceiling" moment. Turns out the ensuite was leaking through the ceiling.

Don't get me started on double glazing.... I've had over 20 windows replaced since I moved in as they have all blown (this was a renovation so we're all new to start with but lazier went bust and we have no receipts)

It's a nightmare trying to get a tradesman especially if it's a smaller but essential job. Most the time they don't show up.

My washing machine dropped dead this morning, but that’s a drop in the ocean compared to most of these.

That said, we need the hanging tiles redoing on the outside walls. Quote was £21K. A large proportion of that is scaffolding, so the sensible move is to get all the exterior paintwork done while that’s up. The decorator quoting for that job pointed out that the lions on the guttering need re-gilding. And so it escalates…

I wouldn’t mind if it was stuff that would bring joy when it’s done, like a new kitchen or replacement sofa. The killer is that we’ll she’ll out tens of thousands only for the house to look exactly the same afterwards. 😩

@VenusClapTrap the lions on the guttering? Do you have lion heads decorating your house?

Yes. Nothing is straightforward with this house.

My house can be a right nasty bastard. It's sprung a leak that needed floor boards removing a week after my new carpet was fitted. Waited until we were on holiday to chuck a slate off its roof causing water damage and smashing one of my planters. It's also playing a long game of gradually leaning further to the right as each year goes by. Its a good job I love it or I'd be leaving it for a gorgeous young new build. I just content myself for now with lusting after them on right move.

I am so lucky that I have a handyman who is able to do most minor jobs in my house or garden. He was painting my next door neighbours window frames many years ago when I asked him about some work I needed doing in my airing cupboard after the hot water tank was removed. Since then, he has done loads of small jobs around my house, including painting the walls in every room, hanging pictures, replacing damaged skirting boards, fitting a key safe, installing racking in the garage, cleaning the patio and facia boards and many more. He charges by the hour, I think it is currently £30 an hour, buys most materials at trade prices and always turns up on time!

He retired from the police and did some training courses and now has too much work! The sad thing is, he plans to retire completely in a few years! I really don’t know what I would do without his help!
