Has anyone painted their bathroom?

Has anyone ever painted their bathroom tiles? If so, does it look good? Can you tell you've painted them? Does it last or start to flake? What paint did you use?

I can't decide whether to do a bit of a DIY make over on our bathroom, or leave it alone. When we moved in our house (6 years ago...) the plan was to put in a new kitchen and bathroom eventually. Both were perfectly functional, just to not really to our taste. We've never got round to replacing either, we did a few other, more necessary jobs, then there was covid, we had a baby, obviously with the cost of living everything is more expensive than it was, and we're now expecting baby number 2. So renovations have dropped down the list of priorities. The kitchen is at a point where we need to replace it soon, but the bathroom is still OK- I just don't like it. But we can't afford to do both.

So I've been toying with the idea of painting the bathroom, but I don't know anyone else who has done this so I'm nervous to go ahead without hearing how it has worked out for others! TIA.

Why would people not be painting their bathrooms? You buy the special paint and it's no different to any other room. I've never lived in a house where I didn't paint the bathrooms

@DreamW3aver Obviously people do paint their bathrooms, as the paint exists...but I've never done it, never lived in a house where it has been done, and I've never seen anyone else's bathroom painted - unless the paint is that good you can't tell, which is what I am trying to find out by asking...

I don't regularly go into other peoples bathrooms so maybe I'm the odd one Should I prepare to be amazed that I've got to my age in life without knowing I was an oddball not to know it was unusual 😀

I did, when I bought a flat with a beige and khaki tiled bathroom which I couldn't afford to change. I used white tile paint, can't remember the brand but it must have been something fairly standard.

It worked ok as a cheap fix for a few years until I had the cash to do it properly. Whether it's worth it depends on how much you don't like your bathroom though. I was just happy that I'd make it look neutral, but over-painted tiles will never look as smart and perfect as new ones.

I bought Dulux trade diamond (I bought eggshell, but I actually think matt would have been better) as it's suitable for bathrooms and you can get it mixed in any colour Dulux make which is a fantastic wide range. I didn't like any of the standard "bathroom paint" colours.

It's expensive but it goes on really well and lasts very well too. You can get it as a non trade customer from Brewers.

Edit: To be clear I painted the walls, not the tiles. I don't think tile paint will be a miraculous invisible fix.

Not bathroom but once painted my kitchen tiles silver with Hammerite spray. They looked cool back I the 90s.

LividSummers · 26/08/2024 16:48

I've painted the whole bathroom but NOT the tiles. Luckily they were the least offensive part of the bathroom.

I HAVE painted a single row of tiles in the kitchen, and that's fine but I wouldn't trust it on a bathroom/shower wall, probably.

Can you leave the tiles and titivate the rest?

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 26/08/2024 16:49

When we moved in our kitchen was very dated, we had huge renovations to do so to tidy it up a bit I painted over all of the floral eighties tiles with white tile paint, it was only splash back area above the work surfaces/sink and window sills , but then ds came along unexpectedly and we're not having the kitchen done until this year, having finally finished the rest of the house, so it's lasted more than six years! It was just a standard tile paint in white. If you look closely you can tell they've been painted because it also covers the grout. I would try a small inconsequential area first and see how it takes.

OP is considering painting over the tiles - not painting plastered walls.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/08/2024 16:52

I did it with some hideous cream and brown patterned kitchen tiles that had thin, dingy concrete instead of grouting, just the cheapest white tile paint.

The smell was awful, but the outcome was some obviously painted but less offensive to the eye tiles that could be wiped over with a damp cloth.

If you have more than three courses of tiles to paint the fumes will be a huge problem.

Apologies, my eyes didn't see the first line of the OP, no wonder I was puzzled by the question

greengreyblue · 26/08/2024 16:56

Yes you need to amend thread title op.

Monkfish24 · 26/08/2024 17:21

Yes I am on about painting tiles, sorry for any confusion. My entire bathroom is tiles, top to bottom. Only the ceiling is painted. Hence me using bathroom and bathroom tiles interchangeably, sorry.

Thanks for all the replies...I think I was hoping (as someone said above) that painting the tiles would be a miraculous fix! I'll probably leave it as it is and live with it. Thanks again.

Looks a faff - don't think I'd want to try it:
