How to get rid of brown limescale under waterline

We have very hard water so the limescale builds up pretty quickly. Our other toilet is spotless, but the one in our en-suite has the worst buildup that we can’t shift! We put a descaling block in the bowl overnight once a week, scrub the bowl and put descaling gel around the rim every night, but we can’t get rid of this buildup and it just looks horrible!

This morning we’ve tried plunging all the water out and attacking the stains with Viakal and Pink Stuff with a motorised scrubbing brush but it still looks like we haven’t touched it in years! Any wisdom to help us get rid of it would be much appreciated please 🙏🏼

Astonish mildew remover worked for us but might depend how bad it is.

Nancy Birtwhistle has a fantastic concoction called Pure Magic and believe me it works!

Oooh, I’ve just had a notification to say the pumice has arrived!

My life must be terribly boring as I’m genuinely excited to get home and have a go. Just hoping DP hasn’t beaten me to it as he’s off today…Envy

I post this every time. Rub it with a 2p piece.

Oh
My

I’m buying a pint for everyone who suggested the pumice. 10 mins of elbow grease and it looks brand fucking new! 🤩

Citric acid . Have a look at Nancy Birthwhistle pure magic recipe. It will sort it.

You can dip a sand paper on a mixture of powdered detergent and liquid bleach and scrub the surface that you want to clean. Watch this.

You need Spirits of Salt (hydrochloric acid)

Barbadossunset · 01/03/2025 13:47

Re spirits of salt, unfortunately the stronger version is no longer available as according the ironmonger, it was used for acid attacks.
‘It’s still available but much weaker and less effective - or so I found it to be.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm placemarking to come back to it later. Exact same problem but really hardly noticeable. Until I poured coke into the toilet. It now resembles the kind of men's toilets found in a public park 🤮

IME that means you've taken the top layer off - if you repeat the same thing again, you'll take the next layer off and eventually get to the end of it.

Big (500ml) bottle of Kilrok before you go on holiday then flush & brush when you get home

Friend whose a plumber says and I can vouch for this that the problem is caused by not flushing after a p**s which is usually at night

This causes a chemical reaction that deposits limescale

That's helpful, thank you

I am pretty sure it is hard water which deposits limescale. But yes if you are trying to be quiet at night by not flushing or have DC who don't flush, then the urine will stain the limescale and make it stink when it's scrubbed off.

You can help prevent limescale build up by cleaning with some anti-limescale stuff regularly, but if it's gone into a thick layer then you have to dissolve it somehow.
