Anyone else slightly stressing their kids starting secondary school?

I am.

Dd has been given a bus pass, but we’ve got to drive her to the bus stop first cos that’s a 30-40 min walk away. She then has to get the 8am bus to get her there for 8.30. Registration is 8.40 so not a lot of time if there is traffic. Oh the reverse, the ONLY bus back is at 15.20. Lessons end at 15.15.

Again not a whole lot of time.

So yeah I’m stressing badly over it

OP instead of trying to use your DHs "contacts in the education board" and expecting your daughter to get special treatment when she behaves badly why don't you look closer at the bus timetable?

If she walks to the next stop it'll take her 47 minutes, that's correct. But if she goes to the stop before by the co-op it'll take her just 7 minutes. So she can do her detention for being naughty and catch a later bus. Just like everyone else has to.

Soubriquet · 26/08/2024 16:05

She’s not one to misbehave anyway so I’m not overly concerned with detentions for her. Back up plan….i guess we would have to drive her there but it’s not a thing we can do every day which is why she has a free bus pass.

Transferring, is possible but difficult since we have spent a fortune on uniform. Don’t want to have to spend a second fortune we can’t afford on a completely different uniform.

Im hoping as the year goes on, it just become second nature and she knows exactly what to do. I’m just stressing

Actually, from the school to the stop before on the timetable it's a 4 minute walk. Why can't she do that? She could even do an after school club with time to spare

Just to make you aware now, I guarantee she will be missing that bus more times than getting it. My son finishes at 3.05pm. He and the other kids don't start leaving until around 3.15pm ish. The teachers don't care. You could ask for an 'early pass' though if your school does it. If so, would mean her allowing to leave 3.10pm. However my son has an one (when he uses it is a different story) but he has missed end of lesson handouts, homework info etc so make sure she has this in hand too. Good Luck

I doubt they will go against my dh regarding detentions. I know it sucks not to be on the schools side on things, but sometimes they have to accept it isn’t always possible and this will be one of them.

And no, she won’t be able to do any after school activities either which I’m also no happy about. I wish she could but I’ve tripled checked the bus times and it definitely doesn’t go after 3.20

The just don’t though. They might go gently for the first half term. But not after that.

The only way round this is to contact the school directly and tell them the issues. They may help that way.

Soubriquet · 26/08/2024 16:15

Thanks. I guess I’m gonna have to contact the school. So bloody frustrating

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 26/08/2024 16:16

Why? She can use the previous bus stop a 4 minute walk away. Loads of kids will do the same

Soubriquet · 26/08/2024 16:20

Are you on about the 15.24 one?

Thats in a completely different village… it’s 5 min by bus/car, but a bit longer by walking. Like a lot

Then they can be responsible for getting her home.

My dh has contacts in with the education board which is why I’m pretty sure they won’t argue too much

So wrong.

Education does NOT work like that. This would be perceived as misconduct.

Where are PP getting "4 minute walk" from? It's 4 minutes by bus, which could be 2-4 miles!

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 26/08/2024 16:22

No the 16:43 or the 16:48

Turn right out of the school and walk 4 minutes to the stop opposite the coop.

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 26/08/2024 16:23

"Where are PP getting "4 minute walk" from? It's 4 minutes by bus, which could be 2-4 miles!"

I looked at the timetable and put the distance from the school to the previous stop in google maps 🤷🏽‍♀️

Soubriquet · 26/08/2024 16:25

The 16.43 is school holidays only.

The 16.48 is a possible one, but we would have to look for where it is cos I don’t know this village very well and it’s not the stop outside the school

OP posts:
stichguru · 26/08/2024 16:26

I presume it is a tiny school?! My son and I went to middle size schools and I'd say expect her to be leaving the classroom 1-2 mins after the bell goes. All the children will be leaving then so 2 mins to get to the gate if she is downstairs and and close to it, 5 from the further away classrooms. Lessons end 3.15, so bus stop 3.22 to 3.30.

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 26/08/2024 16:31

The stop is really close to the school along the main street.

But the reason that bus stops there outside the school at 3.20 is because pupils do catch it. She will just have to be quick or go for that later bus

Fair enough! Your search skills are better than mine, I can't see the names of stops on the image.

Thank you! I’ve just had a nosy on Google and I think ive spotted where the 16.48 bus comes in.

No worries. It might be worth encouraging after school clubs and that 16:48 bus to save her rushing. Or she can probably go to the library

Surely the solution to the detention thing isn’t to assume they’ll pander to your DH, but for your child to not behave badly enough to get a detention? I never had a detention at school, surely it’s fairly easy (and entirely in your control) to get to the end of your school career without one?

DD got one for forgetting her math kit on a day she didn't even have maths(hence forgetting). Still her fault though, because she knew there would be a check and she did the detention. She was kicking herself tbh. It can be very easy to get one.

Ohdearyme72 · 26/08/2024 16:41

Come to the Netherlands - my DD cycles to school :-). But that too caused stress the first few weeks of secondary, trust me. It'll work out and you'll get into a routine eventually. Good luck!

Looks an ok walk

If she gets detentions, then I expect her to have them during lunch time instead of after school. That’s the only change I will want

Teachers aren't paid to work at lunch, it's also when they (surprisingly) have their lunch

Rules are rules for everyone.

Hopefully she will understand the huge inconvenience she will cause if she gets detentions and will avoid them - most children do.
