Minor injuries and secondary school.

How does this work? DC1 slipped on a muddy bank and took out DC2 who went over on her ankle. Can hobble around on it, it's slightly swollen but not overly so, neither is it bruised (yet). She says it's painful to walk on. Just started yr7 so reluctant to let her have time off.
She now has a 5 minute walk to the bus and a 7-8 minute walk the other end. Plus she's on the third floor, no lift. If she was at primary I'd call the teacher and she'd have been allowed to stay in at break and use the lift. Are they likely to let her stay in at break if she tells them it's injured or does it need parental input?
Do I send her in with a note? Email her form teacher (who isn't in on a Monday)? Ask them to let her out early so she can catch the bus?

Head of year?

PandaG · 25/08/2024 19:49

I'd phone the school first thing on her first day back (presuming you are not in England as schools here not back for another week at least). I would ask for permission to use lift, perhaps leave lessons a little early to avoid congestion if you think thst would be helpful. When DS broke his arm he and one friend left each lesson a few minutes early to avoid getting bumped in the corridors, and friend to open doors etc for him. He also had permission to wear a black zip up rather than the school sweatshirt, to accommodate his cast.

They started last week. I don't think there is a lift, she has lessons in the original school building but I can ask DC1.
There isn't a head of year as I understand. There's a form teacher in charge of each class of the year, but DD's is part time and only teaches Wed-Fri.

So, I should try to contact someone then?

Contact her tutor or head of house. When my son broke his ankle I contacted head of house who arranged for him to have his lessons in the library and be excused from p e. Once he was able to put some weight on it, she arranged for him and a friend (to help him) leave lesson 5 mins early to be able to then attend lessons with the rest of his classmates. He was also year 7. I was allowed to drop him on the turning circle so he could get to tutor easier. Def make contact with the school, even if it's reception initially, they will know who would be best to speak with

Yes definitely contact school. Sorry, I misread about the lift. I'm sure the school will want to help your daughter access her lessons by making some adjustments - like leaving each class a little earlier - to make it easier for her.

Because the advice I can give you depends where you are
