I know I can look at google but also wanted to put this on chat to get advice. Is Oxenholme rail station well connected to the rest of the Lake District?
I want to go to Lake District soon but friends busy with work etc.
Would you recommend I go on my own and where would be best say just for an overnight or 2 days and to amble around some nice village shops etc
Thank you!

From oxenholme you could get on another train to Kendal (cos oxenhome isn't really kendal)
or Windermere.
Windermere is a good base. You can get busses to most of the lake District from Windermere. :)

From oxenholme you can get a train to Windermere and from there there is good bus service to many parts of the lake District. I often go to the Lakes solo, I don't know what standard of accommodation you are wanting but I can really recommend the YHA at Borrowdale. You can get the bus from Windermere to Keswick, then the bus down the Borrowdale valley. Lots of places to walk on the doorstep and Derwentwater, Buttermere and Keswick are easy to get to. I think the YHA serves food, but I usually stock up on fancy ready meals at Booths in Keswick and self catering in the hostel kitchen.

You can get the 555 bus from Windermere right through to Keswick, open top buses too!

I'd recommend carrying on right up to Keswick, it's gorgeous up there and a bit less crowded than Windermere.

You can get the train from oxenholme as far as Windermere. From there you can get a bus further north. Buses have winter and summer timetables but the main road buses up the a591 are regular all year round.

Thank you for all the info!
Was going to get a b and b but actually like the idea of the youth hostel!

Not what you asked I know, but as an alternative you could get the train to Penrith and then there are buses to various parts of the northern Lakes. If you did want to go to Keswick that would be a quicker and more straightforward route than going via Oxenholme.

Borrowdale is truly lovely but there are almost no shops to amble around. It’s for country walking really. If you want to amble around village shows I’m not sure the Lake District is the first place I’d recommend. Keswick for Grasmere are probably the best places in the Lakes for that, but it’s a long way to go to look at some shops.
