London..markets and boats!

Going to London for a few days at the end of next week. Teenage daughter keen to look at vintage clothes markets etc..which market is better for that? Husband is a big foodie too, so I’m thinking Borough Market for that, but is there anything “clothes-y” near there? Can we meet everyone’s needs in roughly the same place?
Would also appreciate any advice/experiences of taking a boat down the Thames to Greenwich..is that worth doing?
Thank you in advance.

Check out spitalfields market. Different markets on different days.

Uber boat is great on the Thames.

There's a market at Greenwich
greenwichmarket.london

Nicest way to get there is by Thames Clipper/Uber Boat. You just swipe on as you would do any other form of public transport (but I don't think the fare counts towards the daily cap). Timetables online or at the piers.

Word of warning - there's a huge Half Marathon next Sunday, which finishes at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. Lots of road closures and congestion. So you might want to pick another day.

If you get the boat one way, get the Docklands Light Railway the other way. It runs through Canary Wharf and terminates at Bank or Tower Gateway.

As per pp, the Uber Boat is great. There is however a sightseeing boat that you can often get great deals on (2 for 1 etc) via the Buy a Gift website. The Uber Boat is quicker though, so it depends if you’re in a hurry. If you go via Buy a Gift, search for a discount code, as I’ve found that the website often lets you stack codes and get a real bargain.

Borough market is so busy I find it unpleasant these days. Maltby St market might be more fun and isn't too far from London Bridge. Bermondsey Street is close by and that has nice shops, galleries, restaurants. Including White Cube and the fashion and textile museum.

Yes, the boat to Greenwich is a nice trip.

You could also look at what's on in Kings Cross, Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard. Often craft and food markets, events and clothes shops and restaurants.

Petticoat lane. Borough market is heaving at all times, don't go near Camden.

Thank you everyone, great advice. I’ll start looking into those.

Portobello Road worth a look, it's years since I've been there, someone might have more recent knowledge, I used to go on a Friday, but this says Friday / Saturday / Sunday visitportobello.com/vintage

Spitalfields has gone upmarket from how I remember it, but last time DD and I went there we went on to Brick Lane where there was plenty of vintage shopping.

Borough Market is very unpleasant these days. Massive queues, overpriced food and not many places to sit and enjoy it.

How about going to Little Venice. You could go to Camden for vintage clothes/markets beforehand and then head out to Little Venice for scenery, boat trips and great food.

For food, boats and vintage clothes, I'd suggest starting at Angel and looking in Camden Passage at the remaining vintage shops (sadly less than there used to be but there's still a market sometimes with stalls) then walk along the Regents Canal to Broadway Market - where there are also nice vintage shops and good food stalls! Whilst looking at canal boats on the walk. Not a boat ride but just an alternative london-y suggestion!

Oceangreyscale · 25/08/2024 21:57

Yes I like a walk along the Regents Canal. You could go from Little Venice through Regents Park, Camden and then to Kings Cross. That could be a whole day if you explore along the way.

Last time I went to Portobello Road it was, like Borough, touristy and unpleasant due to crowds. I also used to like it.

I used to go to Camden, Borough, Portobello etc all the time but they are too busy now to be enjoyable. The more fringe bits of each can still be interesting.
