An Autumnal de-influencing thread

Brogues · 25/08/2024 14:10

I am being bombarded by ‘Fall hauls’ with those little snippets of video on Facebook. One was a shopping the thrift store type which was nice and I thought it might be good to have a de-influencing thread so we don’t buy ghastly plastic shite this autumn if anyone would like to join in?

Obviously the leaves beginning to turn soon will be a great help, as will putting the log burner on when it is needed, but today I have been using a new candle that happens to be in an amber-brown glass jar. I will move a few tan cushions downstairs from my son’s bottom bunk to pair with a mid blue alpaca throw (lovely gift a couple of years back).

The seasons will turn without engaging in the hauls is my new manta!

Are we supposed to change soft furnishings with the seasons, now? Who knew!

SoManyTshirts · 25/08/2024 14:18

I usually swap my cotton sofa throw for a wool blanket, both are probably at least ten years old, and maybe rearrange a few ornaments or pot pourri.

Not for at least another month though, we haven’t yet reached August Late Summer Bank Holiday! Ignore all the advertisers telling us to stock up on Aran jumpers and pumpkin spice. They’ll be available for a good few more weeks.

The leaves aren’t turning yet, not down south anyway.

WhiskersPete · 25/08/2024 14:22

Stage one of my de-influencing: I have got the same soft furnishings that I have had all year and they will not change with the seasons.

Or you know, you could just scroll on by… I’m sure you are so super smart and clever you don’t really need me to tell you that though.

Great another piss on any thread mums netter. Good grief they’re out in force today.

I have put up some new fairy lights round the hearth. That will probably be it though. The old ones died a couple of years ago, we didn't have any last year and it looked a bit sad and bare.

My motto is "Never be influenced by an influencer."

Hectorscalling · 25/08/2024 14:30

I change mine every season.

I love it. But I only buy things that are reusable and that I love. Maybe one or 2 things a year at most. I haven’t bought anything so far this year.

I have just done my bay window in my autumn ‘scene’, which is some autumn colour fake flowers I have and a glass blown pumpkin my daughter bought me. I will wash the throws off the sofa next week and swop them out to thicker ones.

I will add some ghosts that my friend crocheted me last year when it gets to October.

I love it doing it, but definitely try not to be influenced and go crazy and buy lots. I don’t really want to get anything this year. I don’t need it.

I also know plenty of people seem really annoyed that other people do it. But I don’t care. It makes me happy. I decided a few years ago, after my mum died, I decided if something makes me happy and it’s not hurting anyone else, I am doing it. And I am happier for it overall.

The kids love it too.

Brogues · 25/08/2024 14:40

@RedVanYellowVan I love fairy lights. I have those vintage style light bulbs in my conservatory to give a lovely warm glow in the colder evenings.

Crochet ghosts @Hectorscalling they sound awesome. A couple of friends collect pottery ghosts. I might dig out the air dry clay and get the kids on a crafting session!

Just genuinely surprised. No one I know does this, apart from maybe get out a throw or two when it gets colder and a few festive bits and bobs at Christmas.

The YouTubers I follow are not interior people but even they have been talking about decorating for Autumn and how they haven't started yet... like it's still summer folks!
But admit I was tempted by an autumnal leaves wreath - til I gave my head a wobble!
I do have bunting up (leftover from DD's birthday) which has a summery vibe and it's up where I put fairy lights at Christmas - maybe an Autumnal garland? 🤣🤣🍂🍂

Skyrainlight · 25/08/2024 14:59

I have lights for the autumn and winter that change the feel of the place, amber glow bulbs, pinks Himalayan salt lamps and micro fairy lights. It completely changes the feel of the house to make it cosy and I just pull the same ones out every year.

StarryDance · 25/08/2024 15:02

Don't fairy lights count a ghastly plastic shite?

If they have plastic eyeballs or pumpkins on them yes otherwise they are just lights.

Apologies then @foxandbee I’ve been stung so many times before I’m just half expecting it here now. I’m surprised you’ve managed to avoid the shops filling up with seasonal decor for many years now. It seems to have gone into overdrive the past couple at least.

@mondaytosunday you have just reminded me I was wanting to use a willow wreath base and do something autumnal. I might incorporate some fairy lights.

I think it depends on how much you do.

I started Christmas decorating in mid November last year. I wanted to make my own garland, for the sideboard that’s under my TV, and some other bits. So I started early so if it was crap I could take it down and start again. Then I started putting the lights up and changed them a few times if I didn’t like them.

Now it’s been built I won’t start as early this year.

I imagine if you are going all out on the outside of your home it would probably be done in a few sessions over a few weeks.

I have a selenite lamp that has a wonderful glow. Looks like a piece of ice when it isn’t on. Very Minecraft according to my youngest.

That’s actually a great idea.

Dd will be back from Uni in late September as we always have a bit of a get together around the 21st. Get the fire pit going, toasted marshmallows etc. She loves crafting, I think her and DS would love to make their own ghosts.

Me too! It's beautiful. I didn't realise it was very minecraft, good to know.

Candlewhiff · 25/08/2024 17:40

I’ll move my sofas, so that I can bring in spare armchair to go in front of fire.
I also have Willow wreath and some crafty autumn leaves I’ve had for a few years and I’ll make my wreath (it later becomes my Christmas one).
When October comes I’ll get out the Halloween Decs I’ve had for about 15 years (I love them).
Lovely thread idea OP.

TheGoddessMinerva · 25/08/2024 17:51

I’ll be doing the Great Clothing Swap soon, where I put all my summer clothes away and get out the winter ones. It hardly seemed worth doing this year, with the miserable weather we’ve had. I’ll also be getting out the second duvet to put on the bed, and putting warmer blankets in the living room. We have a shed full of logs, and plenty of kindling. I don’t really do decoration for the seasons, but I do a bit of adjustment.

I’ll also be picking up some new solar lights of there are any being sold off. I use them all year around the windows, and in the conservatory. The faint glow is enough to stop you tripping over things if you go to the loo at night. I just blu tak the charging panel to a window inside.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 25/08/2024 18:01

I'm in Scotland and Autumn is definitely underway. It's a balmy 11 degrees today and the leaves are already turning. I've swapped over the blankets on the sofa and I'm burning a harvest candle.
