Whispering Angel, is it all that?

Keep seeing it everwhere. Just looks like a pale rose. Is it worth all the hype?

Well I like it, so as data collection goes, it's a resounding yes.

CinnamonSwirlx · 25/08/2024 13:47

No! I tried it last night - got half a bottle for £12 - poured a small glass and struggled to finish it to be honest 👎🏽 very bland xx

whirlyhead · 25/08/2024 13:49

Nope. I bought a bottle when it first became popular and was very disappointed though the woman in the shop did warn me it was over hyped! Not a lot of flavour and expensive.

seeminglyranch · 25/08/2024 13:49

It’s been famous for years! It’s nice enough, very cleverly marketed, you’ll find better from a specialist wine merchant (eg Lea & Sandeman), personally I prefer Minuty Prestige to WA (also cleverly marketed) but it is what it is really? Someone will be along to tell you it’s disgusting, but does it really matter?! Only you know if you like it. It’s £20 a bottle so it’s neither a grand old vintage nor cheap rubbish.

seeminglyranch · 25/08/2024 13:54

It’s the style though, pale, dry, easy drinking, good with summer food and obligatory to have the sun out and well chilled (not over chilled though).

Frontdoordilemma · 25/08/2024 13:56

Perfectly drinkable. Plenty of better roses out there.

SauviGone · 25/08/2024 13:58

It’s just meh, lots of other nicer rosés out there similar prices or cheaper.

Gives me a wicked headache which no other rose wines seem to do.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 25/08/2024 18:33

Nah. I'd expect much nicer for that price. Just about any Provencal rose is as good if not better. For half the money.

DPotter · 25/08/2024 18:40

I like rose.
It's bland and inoffensive.

Not worth £20.

Thingymabobb · 25/08/2024 18:41

No, it’s ok - I’d rather have La Baume Languedoc Rose or Mirabeau Pure Provence Rose for around half the price (when on offer, which they often are). That said, a good Rose always needs some sunshine to really be appreciated!

Switcher · 25/08/2024 18:44

It is nice, but at risk of destroying my supply of the good stuff, I can recommend a much more affordable and nicer option. www.thewinesociety.com/product/the-societys-corsican-rose-2023

ChanelBoucle · 25/08/2024 18:44

It’s nice but there are loads of rosés out there which are better or just as good for half the price. It’s all marketing.

Yes I like those two as well. Far nicer.

WGACA · 25/08/2024 18:47

No, it’s just clever marketing.

BellaEllaWella · 25/08/2024 18:47

It’s all marketing hype - they don’t own enough land to grow all the grapes they need for production so buy them in. The better rosé producers will only use grapes grown on their estate as it gives them more rigid quality control. Leoube rosé is good

user47 · 25/08/2024 18:48

Not a fan! it is no Sancerre or Chablis 😂

SunmerSazz · 25/08/2024 18:49

Pretty much all Provençal rose's are light and very drinkable. whispering angel is just hype!

ohyesido · 25/08/2024 18:51

No. You can get a better rose for £6 in Aldi

Any recommendations from Aldi please? I've just discovered the joys of Provence Rose but am on a budget.

MyveryownFlyingSaucer · 25/08/2024 18:57

It's the 21st Century's Blue Nun. Take from that what you will 😂

Bjorkdidit · 25/08/2024 19:01

I've also just had a half bottle and didn't think it was anything special compared to standard rose at half the price or less. The half bottle was on offer in Waitrose for £9 and I'm glad I didn't bother with a full bottle.

But I think the same about cava/cremant/champagne too - I couldn't pick out cheap/mid range/expensive in a comparison or think that the expensive one is worth three times the price of the cheap one.

It would be interesting to do a blind tasting with average members of the public, enthusiastic amateurs and professional tasters to see if people can reliably determine which is cheap, mid range and expensive and also which they like best.

You might like Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie, that’s very similar to Whispering Angel £6. I personally love the Beachfront pink moscato which is about £4

foodfight · 25/08/2024 19:11

My friend works in the wine industry (based in Italy but goes to a lot of fairs worldwide). When we were out for dinner in London, DP's friend suggested getting a bottle of WA for the table. My friend started laughing and said "good one" - apparently, it's so poorly thought of in industry circles that she thought he was joking!

She was mortified when she realised that he was being serious - she's one of the kindest people I know, so she definitely wasn't saying this with the intention to embarrass or be rude.

Personally I don't mind it, but it's not necessarily the bottle I'd reach for either.

livingonhomemadesoup · 25/08/2024 19:18

I love it. Bought the Lidl dupe earlier in the week but not opened it yet

Devonchills · 25/08/2024 19:22

Definitely over hyped.
Lidl do a rose Gris, which is far superior, only £5.99 too!
