Can I do anything about this ?

So I'm with sky tv. I was paying around 90.00 a month . I did originally have some deals so it was less but then it started creeping up to 90.

I called them just over a month ago. I told them that my income is going to go down by quite alot and I was going to really struggle. They said they would see what they could do to make it cheaper for me . So they took money off this and that etc.and it (seemed) better . But it actually turks out my bill is still 80.00 so I don't know what made me agree to that . I just feel like there were lots of words and numbers being said which did not sink in.

So I called again today this time I was more blunt . I told them I'm really going to struggle. And I'm talking food bank struggle ( I'm not) I just wanted them to hear me . So he went though it with me . And the best he could do was get the tv down to 63.50 a month and I keep what I have . Or I get it down to 40.00 and only get free view channels . So I would be paying 40.00 for channels that are actually free . And I'm stuck in a contract because of the first time I called.

Is there anything I can do about it . I'm thinking probably not.

I might even be worrying over nothing .

I have learning difficulties and I think that's why it did not sink in.

Go and see turn2us, the money charity, step change or citizens advice.

All of these are charities that can help you with budgeting (the first 3) and negotiating debts (all of them).

Give them a ring on Tuesday and sort out an appointment early next week, they will either just negotiate with sky for you, or generally review your finances and contracts if you’d like that.

They help anyone and everyone but if you explain you have learning difficulties they will take more time to explain things. If for any reason you don’t like or understand the person you are talking to, move onto a different charity.

It’s best to sort things earlier rather than later so get it done this week.

It's always a case of new contract

I'd take the £40 option tbh

I know. But I did not fully understand at the time. I don't feel I was listening to properly.

I think that you have 31 days to cancel.
the only way I have ever found is to leave then before you switch to the better value provider they tend to ring you up with the final offer which is decent. Or you decide you like the better buy and switch as planned.

Is there someone who can advocate for you and call on your behalf? I would get them to explain, escalate and see if they can get a better deal in view of their failure to follow your first instruction and your learning difficulties.

This may not help if you're stuck in a contract but nowtv gives you sky channels for about a tenner a month and movies are about £5-10 on top depending on deals.

Agree you should speak to citizens advice or debt support.

thursdaymurderclub · 25/08/2024 20:30

i dont think you will be able to get a better deal by talking to any debt advise companies. they are excellent for helping manage finances and manage debt but they won't fight contracts for you.

do you really need sky? is it a luxury you cannot now simply afford?
