We are moving house but can’t afford the deposit

We are having to move house due to harrassment from neighbours (police have been involved) and black mould/damp in our current property. We have applied for so many properties and not had any luck due to our financial situation as we are on benefits. But finally we have found a house in a different area so it falls under a new council. The area is more expensive so the house is more expensive but private renting at the moment is expensive all over.
we have been accepted for the property but need help with the deposit which is £1500
we have a deposit on our current house but it is only half the amount and it won’t be released until we leave. What can we do?

Sell stuff?
Borrow from family, if you can you repay it?
Ask family for (non-repayable) donation?

Can you try and sell some possessions and clothes - bad neighbours and mould sounds horrible so I would try and get the deposit asap as home is a haven

Also have you contacted the council and Shelter to see if there is anything they can do to help

flossy888 · 24/08/2024 17:33

I dont know where abouts you are but you could apply for a discretionary housing payment from the council, they are available to people on low income/benifits to cover things like moving costs and deposits etc.

Discretionary housing payment from local council? Credit card

CandiedPrincess · 24/08/2024 17:34

Get some extra work to earn some more money?

ginasevern · 24/08/2024 17:35

What difference does it make that it falls under a different council? Anyway, as per a previous post, if you are on benefits you can apply for some kind of emergency loan.

ItisObvious · 24/08/2024 17:35

Discretionary housing payment?

Are you on UC? Do they still do loans ? That may be worth a try if so.

Get a credit card and pay other bills/expenses on that for the next month?

Sell something if you have anything high value?

Kitkat1523 · 24/08/2024 17:35

Credit card
borrow from family

Lilacbluewaters · 24/08/2024 17:42

Thank you all I will look into the discretionary housing payment and universal credit loan.

It’s a long shot but could you get as much of it as you can and then speak to the new LL about increasing your rent to cover the rest of the deposit, especially if you can get a guarantor.

Definitely try the discretionary housing payment and UC first.

You could also both speak to your employers and see if there are any hardship funds available.

Its an insane amount of money.
I really hope you manage to get the deposit in time.

Have you asked the landlord if they will accept for you to pay into a zero deposit scheme? It costs one week’s rent plus £59.99 to set up and £17.50 a year to administer. You don’t get the money back at the end of the tenancy as it’s a type of insurance policy. https://www.zerodeposit.com/tenants/#:~:text=The%20Zero%20Deposit™%20Guarantee,then%20£17.50%20each%20year.

The landlord doesn’t have to say yes. But it is worth asking.
