If you are a healthy weight and eat pasta...

I hear a lot of bad press concerning pasta, and am in this category.
I am lucky in that I haven't experienced any weight changes so far in my life (50) or health problems that might affect it. But I have always eaten pasta several times per week, including decent bread for toast and other white horrors.
That said, my daily food intake is fairly healthy over all.

I would like to know if pasta is still in a state of disgrace Grin, since most of the internet gives it a big red flag. I know about the calories in it, but they don't seem like a terrible amount per portion.

It was something of a staple when I was growing up, part of a decent balanced diet, although not every day. Chucking some fresh tomato and pesto on it was a favourite, quick student meal for me. I don't recall anyone complaining about it being calorific.

Personally I believe in 'everything in moderation', generally, although food does seem to affect a lot of us in different ways. I don't know a great deal about insulin but appreciate that this concerns some.

So is it still popular in your house? Or do you find it problematic?

I don't think the Italians are worried about it. Pasta doesn't make you fat. The amount you eat does.

Beth216 · 24/08/2024 18:25

I'm 49 and eat pasta, rice, potatoes or noodles every evening. We mostly have wholemeal but often have microwave white rice (the wholemeal version is horrid) or nice Italian white pasta at weekends. Forgot to say I'm just over 8 stone.

luminousloops · 24/08/2024 18:32

A lot of places online saying it contains absolutely no nutrition which is just so wrong.

Bread can be tricky. Most supermarkets have ruined my favourites. I used to buy fresh panini's and ciabatta rolls at Tesco until they started filling them with palm oil and glucose, etc. It just wasn't necessary at all Sad
I don't like sourdough, so often use a seeded cob for toast.

I find the Piadina flatbreads only contain 3 ingredients, and they're lovely. M&S make the best french sticks but god knows what's in em.

I sometimes do a Hugh Fearnley flatbread recipe, easy to make and freeze, warm up in a dry pan.

I eat a lowish carb diet due to blood sugar issues. I'm a healthy weight.

Anyway, i eat pasta and love it. I just keep my portion moderate.

We make carbonara a lot and a nice simple tomato and basil from the garden. I also like stiring in boursin, spinach and mushrooms.

That sounds too delicious! I don't like the idea of cheese with pasta but cream cheese....might just swing it.

I've been a Slimming World target member for about 18 months and I eat a lot of pasta! Probably every other day. A large portion, but a third of my plate is some sort of veg/salad. Pasta has always been my downfall and I'm so happy to have found a way of eating which lets me enjoy lots of it whilst maintaining a healthy weight. I'm 5ft 4 and generally a couple of pounds either side of 9 stone - so not skinny but not overweight. I eat absolutely no bread now though.

broccolienthusiast · 24/08/2024 18:40

Multiple times a week, at least 100g (dry) per portion. I eat a lot 😁

My ex used to eat a bucket load of pasta with some creamy tuna feature...almost every night.. His plate was a large ceramic salad bowl. After putting some weight on he blamed the pasta and never touched it again. Lost the weight then blamed the pasta some more.

It wasn't the pasta. It was the amount of bloody pasta!

I’ve never been bigger than a size 8 and I have quite a lot of carbs. I’m veggie so often pick a carb (pasta, rice, cous cous, polenta or potatoes) add veg, herbs and spices, and that’s my dinner.

Pasta and bread in particular can bloat me a bit, but they aren’t to blame for periods when I’ve gained weight - that’s cheese and wine!

I do a lot of exercise, which might be a factor too.

KohlaParasaurus · 24/08/2024 18:54

We have pasta in some form at least once most weeks, alternating with other starchy carbs. I'd estimate 75-100g uncooked weight per person if I'm cooking it from scratch, or whatever's in a lasagne ready meal. I'm not overweight and nor is DH.

My mother absolutely denies it now, but Dad, my sisters and I remember that when she was trying to lose weight and only having Ryvita and cottage cheese for her dinner she'd serve us the rest of us up plain boiled macaroni and chips with bread and butter on the side. We all wolfed it down. Dad would put vinegar on his macaroni.

I remember from Michael Mosleys podcast Just One Thing that reheated pasta is actually good for you! So enjoy. ☺️

Sure i've heard this about potato, too.

Do you mean letting it cool fully then reheating?

Husband’s brewing our spaghetti as I type. Love it with fettuccine.

Georgyporky · 24/08/2024 19:20

Everything in moderation
I eat pasta & rice, but they are a stodge & I use them as an accompaniment to meat/fish & veg. So many pasta recipes are not a balanced meal.

luminousloops · 24/08/2024 19:21

Got to admit that wine bloats me in a bad way. I've never had a regular foodstuff have quite as much an effect. If I drink wine for any length of time I do seem to get softer/flabbier regardless of activity levels or what I eat for meals.
It's strange stuff.
I do like a glass of port every now and then though, what can you do...

Pasta and carbs in general have always formed a big part of my diet and I've never been overweight.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/08/2024 19:25

I eat loads of pasta and am a fine weight

Be4thedawn · 24/08/2024 19:31

I'm always thinnest when I eat a lot of carbs and less meat. I was super skinny when I was vegetarian and my staple diet was pasta with tomato and veggie sauce.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2024 19:56

Meant to say brewing our bolognaise. Spaghetti with fettuccine would be very weird 🤣

whateveryouwantmetosay · 24/08/2024 20:01

I've simply swapped regular pasta for chickpea pasta. Way more protein and more filling.

bakewellbride · 24/08/2024 20:03

I eat pasta regularly and am size 8. Portion size is key.

Aldi sell pasta made from chickpeas, peas, lentils etc and that's healthier and worth a try. Protein pasta

luminousloops · 24/08/2024 20:05

Come to think of it, around 5 years ago I went low carb for 6 months for bowel related reasons (not weight) and did stack a few pounds on. I hadn't been eating more, but was hungry all the time. A huge hunk of lean meat just didn't do the job of satiating me.
When I returned to staple carbs it all went back to 'normal'.
I think we all work differently. Still happy to see more pasta love on here though as it feels sparse on the webz these days.

A reddit thread earlier had a bunch of people declaring pasta to be the devil Shock

Edited to add: when I tried low carb I did eat a lot of healthy fats, not just lean meat (nuts, omelettes, cheese, cream, butter, etc).
That said nuts are still the love of my life, and I'm anyone's for a chunk of Comté....I often eat a few mixed with avocado and cheese, or blueberries for supper.

I don't buy into any of this cutting out carb nonsense. I've recently hugely restricted UPF from my diet and am eating lots of homemade bread, pasta, potatoes, rice (though do try to go for whole meal) full fat butter, sugar etc and I've lost 10lb in 2 months without restricting anything else, and I already had a healthy BMI so it's not like I've got a huge amount to lose. Also bored of the high protein brigade. It's just about balance for me.

LoneHydrangea · 24/08/2024 20:10

I really love pasta. Sadly, I have to watch my carbs, so only eat them at the weekend.

greengreyblue · 24/08/2024 20:12

We all eat pasta at least once a week. All BMI 23 or lower I think We have wholewheat pasta and white pasta. No huge bowls, lots of veg, serve with salad.
