Anyone else love autumnal foods?

I can’t say I’m crazy about the nights drawing in or the grey damp days, but surely autumnal foods are the best foods?

This week I’ve been cosying up with Nigel’s Kitchen Diaries anticipating the days I can serve fruit crumbles, stews that have been puttering in the oven all afternoon, roasted squash soup and game pie. And to go to the pub for a big Sunday roast after a gentle walk (to earn it, obvs.)

I’m doing my best to enjoy a couple more weeks of barbecues, salads as a complete meal and strawberries (although they are getting a bit sour now.) but I can’t wait for my first autumn pie.

Anyone else a great fan of autumnal foods? Care to share your favourite foods and recipes?

I love pumpkin. The decorative ones are not for eating, mind.
Roasted in the oven.
In a risotto, it takes the same time as the rice if you cube it.
Blended into a soup.
Boiled, puréed and mixed into fruit loaf.
The seed kernels are delicious, too.

Im with you - even quite like indulging in the slight melancholy and reflection that comes with autumn.

Looking forward to making this again - my absolute favourite!

I do love soup and stews and feel very comforted and nourished by them.
Unfortunately, my dc don't so that's annoying.

Game pie? Hell no....stews,soup,crumbles....all just food. Don't get the label of 'autumnal' which is everywhere right now.

What’s not to get? Foods are seasonal. You can’t make a plum crumble in summer, unless you eat air freighted plums. You can’t eat Eton mess in Autumn unless you eat revolting strawberries.

If you like the sorts of food that are at their best in Autumn (and for some of us that includes game) and dishes that lend themselves to autumn weather, you like autumnal food.

That looks lovely. We have squashes growing in a bed at the end of the garden (from where we chucked last year’s Halloween lanterns for the hedgehogs) so I’ll give it a try.

I am slightly tired of the endless salads, I must admit. Autumn is my favourite time of year anyway.

Exactly this!! Coming into my favourite time of the year! Love the comfort foods of stew, crumbles, soups…

I currently have a wood burning cooker that once autumn arrives is on all the time and I love nothing more than putting a stew in the oven…. The way the aroma permeates the kitchen is just so cozy. Though I do love a summer bbq too. I guess I love the change of seasons

Yes. I like eating seasonally and enjoy the anticipation of blackberrying, harvesting the beans and fruit etc in the garden, even more than the first homegrown salad of the summer. Sloe gin, windfall chutney, plum crumble, I made one last night with some of my lovely neighbour’s surplus plums, and Bramleys from a laden tree in the community orchard!

HelloMiss · 24/08/2024 14:06

It's still summer and my plum tree is full of ripe plums!
