Doing English Lit A level independently

DS is taking a year out to work, and wants to do English Lit A level to keep his mind fresh, and to get more UCAS points for next year. Has anyone done this? Which is the best online provider? I'll be helping him a bit (this is my area, sort of) but I don't know about marking schemes etc.

Better to get him a tutor alongside the online course - he needs someone experienced to mark his essays

You'll need to find a school or centre for him to take his exams as an external candidate. Given that there is coursework involved, you might find that difficult, but if a school is going to put forward coursework marks to an exam board, they'll have to be sure that it's his own work.
As an exams officer, I've accepted external students for English Lit, but have insisted that they take the same exam board as us and that they pay for our teachers to advise on, and mark the coursework and moderate it with our internal students. I wouldn't accept anything external student who didn't agree to this.
I would find a centre as soon as you can who will agree to accept him. Entries are made by February for the summer, so you'll need to start looking now.

You can find past papers and mark schemes on the exam board website.

Print out the specification and buy the York notes.

Could he do an evening course? I did a one year English Lit A-level course while working at a college. The course was focused on doing the minimum amount of books to get us through the exams and it was good to talk to other students as well

Perfectly manageable to sit as an independent candidate. One of children did an extra two GCSEs and an extra A' Level this way.

You could join one of the A' level, or general exam, home ed. groups for advice. It's easy enough to find a centre to sit the exam (some are more expensive than others). We just bought the course books and I marked papers. DC didn't have tutor help.

Dd did other subject a levels with Oxbridgehomelearning no online classes but she works through the modules they mark assessments and coursework and she sat at independent centre. Few minor communication issues but she is happy with them

Some universities require all A-levels to be done at one sitting to count, so check with the unis he is thinking of first.

Thank you for this, I had no idea.

And thanks to all the others for your advice too. We'd love for him to do an evening class, but we live very rurally and the one local college has cut all its evening classes due to funding.
