Sorry for the boring thread- my 13 year old daughter has had nits for months - the doctor said there is nothing on prescription and worse case cut her hair- not great for 13! Any tips gratefully received - obviously tried the chemist stuff- many thanks x

Wet combing with nit comb. Wash hair, smother in conditioner and then comb out her hair in sections repeat day 1, 5, 9, 13 and then day 17. Do everyone in the family hair. Or use nit shampoo, then repeat 7 days later. Hopefully you'll get rid of them soon

Why did I read that in the style of Clarence Boddicker?
”Guns guns guns!”

Have you tried lots of conditioner on dry hair with a nitty gritty comb? It worked for us - 30 lice in my DD's hair after a holiday 😱

Cheap conditioner and Nitty Gritty comb, 100%!

Shampoo is useless on its own. Wash and change bedding daily. Hoover house including couch or any soft furnishing areas she sits it. Any soft toys/blankets/cushions either wash them or put them in a bin bag tied tight and stick them away for 4 weeks. I removed the fur from my daughter’s hood and would wash her dressing gown or oodie if worn. I washed her jacket once per week as she needed it for school.
Nit comb daily for 3-4 days. Then every 2nd day for 3-4 days. Then every 3rd day. I did this until I had 5 times in a row with nothing found on comb. We then went down to combing once per week. I now still comb her hair once per week to make sure I catch them early. Seem to be going round her school a couple of times per term.

We’ve always been able to sort it with NitNot treatment followed by a good thorough combing. If it is a bad case I would do two rounds of treatment about a week (?? ) apart so you get the full lifecycle. You need to leave treatment in for half an hour or so, so less convenient than the drugstore brands, but has been more effective for us. Personally I have had really mixed results with Hedrin type treatments - I think there is increasing immunity amongst lice. NitNot works by smothering the lice, so you don’t have to worry about resistance.

Lots of conditioner on wet hair and combing with a nit comb every 3 days. You break the breeding cycle and it means you don't have to put harsh chemicals on your dc's heads. I became a bit obsessed about counting them . . .
Make sure to wash all bedding during this process. Hoover regularly - should be sorted in 2 -3 weeks

thinkfast · 23/08/2024 22:59

Hedrin once (used twice one week apart) plus nitty gritty comb and change all sheets and towels works for us.

Wendalicious · 23/08/2024 23:10

Thanks so much all x

NitNot has worked really well for us too. And then weekly checking with conditioner and comb. Sympathies OP - they're horrible!

Dd1 had thick waist length hair when she got nits. We found this the easiest and cheap solution.

It's mouthwash, I think it's called Lysteria.
Drench the hair from dry in the mouthwash, so every bit is soaked. Put all hair under a shower cap for 15 minutes. Wash hair as normal. The nits just floated off so took 2-3 bath loads of water. Comb at end to get as much out as possible.
Repeat About every 2-3 days for a fortnight.

Worked far better than any other stuff.

This, but do it every other day for a week. It works. When my DD was little she had long, thick, corkscrew-curls hair. When I say conditioning & combing took hours I mean it!
I thought she was re-catching nits off someone every time but it was that I just wasn't conditioning/combing often enough. So did it every other day and within a week they were gone.

Melroses · 23/08/2024 23:47

Loads of really slippy conditioner, and loads of combing always worked for us. It is worth giving the conditioner 5 minutes before you start combing (and maybe adding a bit more)

The only time I bought anything from the chemists, it didn't work, smelled awful, and I had to do all the combing anyway.

Once they have all gone, if you do it once a week, new infections will not get a foothold.

A tight close to the head hairdo is useful for school, with cheap hair gel if you have used very slippy conditioner. I have found a missed one smothered by the hair gel before.

Update- I’ve just spent £200 on two private sessions and they have gone!! Not everyone’s course of action I understand but for us- life changing 👍👍

Iknowitsyou · 16/09/2024 22:10

What did that involve? Is it just someone who does it for u? I didn’t know this was a thing but wow anything to make it easier! Glad they are gone 🎉

Puppyyikes · 16/09/2024 22:12

Can you try a hair straightener? Burn the nasty things!

otherwise, combing- and be aware the comb doesn’t get everything. You have to also sometimes pull them out with your nails. Urghhhh.

Wendalicious · 16/09/2024 22:17

It was about 4 hours of “hoovering” the hair and sucking them out- pain free! I didn’t know it was a thing either x

Good to know for future!
