The Bob Marley Quote 'Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean'...

I do largely believe in this when it is very straightforward a situation.

E.G. If someone was criticisng my house being messy, when theirs was also a mess, or my dress sense, if they had a similar one, a bit like the Aesop's fable is it? About the Crab that could only walk sideways?

But then I think, you don't need fully clean hands to have a point. If someone criticised my driving, when they couldn't drive themselves-it doesn't mean they can't recognise a bad driver.

Same as I know a crap doctor when I encounter one, even though I am not a medic. Or a crap waiter, even though I am not one.

What are your thoughts on it?

Bob Marley was a domestic abuser so I don't care what he said about anything.

That is a good point. Very ironic!

I always say the same about John Lennon.

There is a reason I am asking this. I have had a friend jibe at me about neglecting my dog. I don't believe I neglect my dog. She's fed, walked, given vet care, loved, comes everywhere she can with me (there's only me and her at home). The reason he has said this is he says I don't brush her enough. She's a double-coated breed. I do brush/comb her, but she moults all year round and maybe I could/should do it more? I had a dog groomer out recently to get to the undercoat because she literally won't let me, growls, runs away and she's a large dog, It's just not easy!
But I don't believe I neglect her.

I do believe he did neglect his (similar breed of) dog however. It just made me think.

Sometimes people project their own shortcomings onto others, to distance themselves from their own uncomfortable behaviours. Could be that?

Patienceisntvirtuous · 22/08/2024 18:09

I have considered that. His dog died of an illness last year. He hadn't noticed his dog was ill. When I saw the dog for the first time in months I pointed out the unkempt coat, weight loss and glazed over eyes-he hadn't noticed. He very seldom walked the dog either. I see that as neglect. It made me want to say the quote in the title hence the thread, when he told me I neglected mine. I didn't say it.

Similar debate today but the example was parking, i dont drive but i also know cars should not be parked part pavement part road based on the highway code, and i got told apparently that as i dont drive then i should not comment, so instead i changed it and said as a pedestrian then why are car drivers inconsiderate with how they park, but i still dont think i convinced them

Yes, being inconsiderate is not something you need certain skills to be able to recognise. I'm not a parent, but I don't think this makes me less entitled to be annoyed if I go to a supermarket and one parent is letting their child run around pulling things from shelves etc (happened last week!) I agree the same with parking.

I did have a male friend who doesn't drive once say something about 'women drivers' when I was driving us somewhere and I got lost..I did call him out on that, taking a wrong turn doesn't make me a bad driver! I'd never driven to that particular place before. If I'd have got lost and then sped, cut corners or gone up a one way street to counteract it then that might make me a bad driver!

But yes, as of my friend with the dog situation it really did irritate me. I think he is projecting.
