How long is probate taking at the moment if you applied on line

Hi, soon the apply for probate. How long did it take once you had the probate code from HMRC and you applied on line?

Please say when you applied, as I think things are getting worse. The website says 16 weeks, but then talks about “more complicated” estates taking longer. I’m not sure if having IHT is deemed complicated, when it’s been paid/looked at by HMRC.

I’m trying to manage the beneficiaries expectations … and plan when property can go on the market.

We finally found out that we do have to pay IHT £56k

So does anyone know if I pay it online , do the HMRC send you through a code by post so you can apply for probate or do you get it when you pay the tax ?

You can pay online or by cheque but you do need to get a payment reference number from HMRC before you make a payment. Once you’ve paid they will send you a unique code number which will allow you to apply for probate.

You can apply for the reference number you will need to pay in the tax.

https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/shortforms/form/CAR_IHT_Pre_Ref

they will send it to you in about 10 days, or if you call in about 7 when they may give it over the phone.

if you already have one, the ways to pay it are here - dependant on how you want to pay.

once it’s all paid, they should send a code you can use to apply for probate.

🤞🏻

I submitted the IHT by post and the supplementary forms online on the 19th September.
Received the code from HMRC on the 15th October, and have received an email today, 17th, advising that Grant of Probate has been made and in the post!
So less than a month since forms submitted to HMRC to the Grant and 2 days for Probate Office.
i did not use a solicitor but did it all myself. IHT 400 and 10 supplementary forms required, but no IHT to pay.
Doesn’t look like using a solicitor or probate professional is needed to get it through quickly. Just full disclosure and all the evidence they ask for in the forms.
I can’t quite believe it though, and really pleased we didn’t pay the £5k for a solicitor or the £10k fee the bank wanted!

Did you send the original will and death certificate once you had applied for probate on line ?
