Does this sound like a lot of hours to you?

Hi just want an opinion really
My partner started a new job and full time role.
He gets bank holidays off and a week over Christmas so has been told he only gets 21days holiday a year because of this and only 1 day off a week.
Monday -8-5
Tuesday 8-5
Wednesday 8-4
Thursday 8~5
Friday 7-5
Saturday 9-1
It's salaried not hourly paid.

Does this sound right ?
To loose holidays because of bank holidays ?
And the hours ?
Plus 1 day off a week ?

I think the legal minimum is 28 days including the bank holidays, so technically 20 days plus the 8 bank holidays. If he’s getting 21 plus bank holidays plus a week at Christmas that sounds ok. As in legal.

Nix32 · 22/08/2024 11:14

What lunch break does he get? I'm assuming it's unpaid so just trying to calculate total paid hours.

hohonoo · 22/08/2024 11:16

He gets 30 mins lunch a day
Except Saturday
He's just knackered all the time

He's got the legal minimum days off but i'm not sure if he's over the hours allowed to work in a week without signing a waiver. It's either 50 or 60 but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to clarify

It's not a working pattern I'd be happy with though and I quite often do 45/50 hours a week but have far more time off

Enko · 22/08/2024 11:18

"Loosing" bank holidays for being off on the bank holiday is an odd way to phrase it. It just means he has bank holidays off. Normal in many jobs.

How many breaks does he have on those shifts? If assuming just 1 hour lunch then he is working 44 hours a week that is within the legal frame for the UK. According to the Working Time Regulations 1998, most workers in the UK cannot work more than 48 hours per week on average, calculated over a 17-week period. You can work more than 48 hours one week, as long as the average over 17 weeks is less than 48 hours a week.

So in Short yes legal both for hours and holiday

Bjorkdidit · 22/08/2024 11:19

It's only half days on Saturday so not 6 full days a week but it is quite a lot of hours.

Does the pay reflect the longer hours and apparently compulsory Saturday mornings?

How does it compare with similar jobs that he could get?

skilpadde · 22/08/2024 11:26

The legal minimum of 28 days is for a 5-day week. For someone on a different pattern, they should check they're getting 5.6 weeks.

With him working 6 days a week, If he's getting 21 days plus 8 bank holidays plus 6 days at Christmas, that's 35 days off, so 5.83 weeks off. It's slightly over the legal minimum but not much.

It's okay for him to work a 6-day week, as he must get 1 day off a week.

It sounds miserable though... is it a stepping stone to something better?

TerfTalking · 22/08/2024 11:26

Looks to me that he is getting 34 days leave including bank holidays and Christmas and his working week excluding lunch breaks is 46 hours a week.

It's a long week yes, but not unlike many jobs such as road haulage, senior management, healthcare etc.

My late husband used to work 8-6 Monday to Friday plus Saturday 8-12
Depends on the business your husband’s employed in. If he’s tired all the time it may be a good idea for a health check.
Aldo depends on his age of course.
Btw - I work 8-8 3 days a week and find that quite tiring sometimes. But then I am 74.

mushypaperstraws · 22/08/2024 11:49

That's 46 hours, so yes legal, but sounds very tiring and depressing.

Hopefully there's a lot of extra money coming in to make up for it?!

I'd honestly rather do a 37 hour a week job and then another 9 hours side hussle/second job to earn extra money. Going to the same place 6 days a week would wear me down quickly

hohonoo · 22/08/2024 11:54

@mushypaperstraws after tax he gets around £1,800
It's just very mentally draining
It's sale based so lots of targets
A lot of them unachievable in my opinion

Balls to that pay for all those hours. He needs to look for something new.

Rory17384949 · 22/08/2024 12:15

The holiday sounds right because it's 21 days plus a week at Christmas and bank holidays.
It is a lot of hours in a week and long days. It is less than 48h though so legal I guess.
Is the pay good?

He'd probably be able to find something better then, even the same pay on 5 days 9-5 would be better

Dearg · 22/08/2024 12:21

Does achieving the target mean additional pay - commission or bonus? There are a number of roles like that .
My nephew sells cars. Similar number of hours , although times are different - he tends to work 10 - 7 weekdays, then shorter on the weekends.- it probably works out around 46 hours in any week.
It’s a hard way to support a family.😏

That sounds like it's not even NMW, which I think would be £1700 for 40 hours, unless the pension contribution is quite high and he has a student loan.

Could he look for anything better paid or the same money for fewer hours?

ThatAgileLimeCat · 22/08/2024 12:28

That could be just about minimum wage for those hours but would need to know gross salary to be sure. Does he get bonus or commission to bump it up a bit?

hohonoo · 22/08/2024 12:51

They get a bonus if they hit the shop target but never hit it as it's set so incredibly high.

That’s rotten then Op. Hopefully there is a better job out there for him, in the meantime, it’s building his experience.
