self service tills and disability

I really struggle with the self service tills. they are just a little bit low. I am fairly tall and can't bend. so it's a bit undignified, I have to bend at the knees. but you scan them onto the too low platform and THEN have to pick them up from too low platform and put them back in trolley. and by that time I'm in agony and need to lie down

anyone else struggle with self service? I'm fed up with shopping. it's so hard to get a delivery slot and Lidl and Aldi don't do deliveries anyway, so you have to pay a lot more for shopping at Tesco etc

oh no, I was supposed to reply to @MuggleMe . apologies @Elleherd , I did read/understand/reply to your post. it was you saying that disabilities get worse with age that made me realise I AM going to have to ask for help

Yep, in the nicest possible way, get over it. As described above, in few other people's worlds can I pass as anything but, and people like me are telling you, you're going to need to do this, so might as well start now, and maybe slow up some of the 'it' becoming worse and more visible sooner. I think you are trying to say that my disability isn't that bad, so I have a responsibility to get over my humiliation/embarrassment and normalise asking, in the interest of those with worse disabilities. is that correct?

I might have missed where you said what your disability is, so I do not know if my disability is "worse, or not", not that it matters, but nonetheless I have found that my local Sainsbury's have been very helpful in opening up a till when I have gone shopping late, say after 8pm. I just had to ask the lady at the self service desk for a till to be opened, and she radioed for someone to come along, and open one. I have not disclosed any reason why, but I did have a small trolley each time. I have no issue in asking for a till to be opened, and in the day it is not a problem as they always have at least two, or three tills open.

I have similar problems to the OP. I use a walking aid and also find using the self service tills incredibly awkward & painful. I'll avoid them if it all possible.

I've been offered help a few times, though not all. In future, I'll do as some posters have suggested, and ask for a member of staff to do the scanning for me.

I've asked several times for feedback to be sent to the shop manager, but I doubt the management could do anything about it.

I agree some of the tills are not designed with any disability in mind and standing in a queue can be difficult for some people. If that is the case, you need to talk to a member of staff and tell them you have a disability and are unable to queue and you also need help at the till. They will take to past the queue to the next available till and assist. That is what they are there for. I had some really good help in Lidl when I was on crutches, they came round with me carrying my basket and selecting items. I was so impressed.

I have seen a member of staff help in this way in an M&S store. As they say, if you don't ask, you don't get, or words to that effect.

I don't understand the problem with getting a delivery? If you book a few days in advance there are always plenty of slots.

I’ve had a till opened for me more than once. I’ve also had staff do the self scan for me. I do have a very visible disability.

Where I used to live had a lot of outside steps, so I used to have a home delivery service. But they would constantly send me meat that was very near to its use by date, and the veg would not be as fresh as what I would have picked for myself. Obviously I can only speak of my experience. Also going to the shop is important to get a bit of exercise, and also feel a sense of normality. It may take me awhile, and exhaust me, but my mental health is important too.

  1. I prefer to use Lidl because it is so much cheaper and I prefer their products 2) I used to regularly get Tesco delivery but since COVID it has been very difficult to get slots. it has improved recently, but you do need to book at least a week in advance. I'm not that organised
