Overwhelmed by vitamin choice: kids and adults

ThePenIsBlue · 21/08/2024 21:39

I just bought my kids haliborange chewy multi vitamin to start taking each morning. Is that good? Are there better ones?

I also need to start looking after myself. I currently take an out of date cod liver oil
tablet and a magnesium tablet each night before bed. I need to do better . I’m 42, I have an underactive thyroid and I don’t recognise myself in the mirror anymore. I used to be a fantastic size 10-12, and despite not changing my diet and still working out I’m now a 16 and just feel uncomfortable in my own skin. I’m also unhappy generally and my marriage is
falling apart. But, hey ho! The right vitamins will fix that! 🤣🤣

please help! It’s overwhelming out there!

Vitamins shouldn’t be used to replace a lacking diet - you all need to be getting necessary nutrients from your diet ideally. Most vitamins are poor quality and full of bulking agents.

Wwyd2025 · 21/08/2024 21:46

You need to fix your diet.

Plenty of leafy greens, fruit, proteins, calcium will fix it.

reluctantbrit · 21/08/2024 22:03

You need proper medication for your thyroid. Vitamins are good if you have a documented deficiancy but then only take what you actually need.

Most multivitamins are useless, most children function well with a normal diet (not vegetarians or vegans) unless the parent has a very detailed knowlege about fruit/veg/grain/pulse intake.

Girls may benefit from iron when they have their period if they don't eat red meat.

I have a great diet - I cook everything from scratch, lots of fruit and different colour veggies. Kids aren’t fussy and eat mostly everything. I just want to try and avoid some of the back to school bugs.

And yes I’m on levothyroxine obviously.

Because you’re heading towards peri menopause I’d swap the cod liver oil for a good Omega 3, make sure your magnesium is glycinate, think about vitamin D in the winter ( and make it D3 with K2 when you do hit peri ), and add in vit B complex when you get tired in peri.

Thank you, this was a helpful response.

Multivitamins aren't necessary if you have a good diet, they won't stop kids getting bugs.

DS and I take vitamin D in the winter months though.

lljkk · 22/08/2024 07:27

don't go to American drugstores... shelf after shelf of just vitamin A or just vitamin E. It is bewildering.

I doubt that vitamins make people lose weight or get better skin unless they have a diagnosable deficiency.

BattyEyelashes · 22/08/2024 07:49

You can take multivitamins and add Omega 3, vit d.

Obviously anecdotal but I’m 44 and peri menopausal too. I found I was gaining weight as just felt really run down/ low energy and a coffe/ lots of biscuits gave me a boost to keep going. Takings probiotic/ b12 / multivitamin / cod liver oil with omega 3 and it’s given me more energy overall. Trying to be more mindful too. Yoga stretches in the morning, swimming when I can squeeze it in. I’ve dropped a dress size to a 14, lost a stone (over a few months so not crash dieting) and feel a bit more like myself. I quit booze as well so that also helps but my skin/ eyes look really good. I think I’d like to lose another stone and that’d get my bmi in normal range.

givemeanother · 22/08/2024 09:03

@Lovelysummerdays thanks for sharing, this is really interesting to me as I feel in a similar position. Have you tried HRT or did you manage to improve your symptoms from vitamins alone?

Lovelysummerdays · 22/08/2024 10:47

I haven’t tried hrt yet. I’m still having regular (ish) periods and GPs can be a bit dismissive where I live. I’m 45 in a few months and then guidance becomes much more gung ho so I was going to wait till then and be a bit pushy.

givemeanother · 22/08/2024 11:16

Thanks @Lovelysummerdays that also sounds familiar. Same age, also expecting more GP help come my next birthday!

Raaraathelionrah · 22/08/2024 11:22

You need to buy lamberts- they are tested and work. Other brands are like throwing money down the drain.

rainingoutsideagain · 22/08/2024 11:28

Tonic health are the best in the market as zero additives

Thank you. What specific brands did you use? And was this an all-in-one or were you taking a handful of pills!

Handful of pills, the b12 is tiny, cod liver oil with omega 3 is a two in one, multivitamin with iron, probiotic is a drink thing Yakult or whatever is on offer. I just bought boots own brand on a 3 for 2 it wasn’t expensive about a tenner for 60 days. Possibly it’s just a placebo but I tend towards anaemia and b12 levels are technically fine but on the low side and I do feel a bit more energised. So I’d say it’d worth a try. I wouldn’t spend £££s

I usually research symptoms / cravings first to see what deficiencies I might have and only then take supplements if and when I need to.

Ask
staff in good healthstores for advice, I like this one
https://www.revital.co.uk/apps/store-locator
but not many branches around.
Sorry most in Greater London.

Usually I stick to these top
quality brands only :
Solgar
Viridian
Pharma Nord
Pure
Nutri Advanced
Bio Care

I always consult Louise Hays' list of symptoms too, she makes total sense to me but might not appeal
to everybody.

Vitamins are the ultimate UPF.

I'd avoid them at all costs, they do you more harm than good. Just make sure you are eating a balanced diet, that will cover your needs.

spikeandbuffy24 · 23/08/2024 16:17

I take these
Plus a high dose of vitamin D and an iron tablet, swallow the lot with a fizzy vitamin c
