That was hard to listen to, even though the episodes are short I still took breaks. It’s such unfathomable horror. What really surprised me was how sympathetic it made me feel to some of the individuals who are potentially facing charges.

Inquiry report is due out on 4th September

Something else thats hard is that Grenfell has changed nothing. SH tenants are still told to put up and shut up when complaining about poor workmanship and told that their housing is "free"

From the article.

A senior Rydon manager admitted in an internal email they were using “cheap incompetent sub-contractors” and complained about “massive pressure from the rebel residents about our quality of work”. Dangerous faults included the installation of combustible window surrounds, in breach of the specification.

I agree - the really worrying part is that so little has changed.

Only 1200 or so high rises are remediated out of 4600.

Plus, combustible materials are used everywhere - hence the Dagenham fire.

Building Control is a joke - they don't enforce fire safety as it's not their legal duty and they are only concerned with structural safety, not workmanship.

The Building Regulations are still very complex and ambiguous.

Construction Product testing is still a mish mash of European and British Standards and testing houses are paid to certify products, so hardly impartial.

As for building professionals - it's always someone else's responsibility.

Residents were told to remove their pets, but no compensation was offered to cover the
costs involved.
 No consideration was given to residents who worked night shifts.
 Workers used electricity paid for by of residents, without offering compensation.
 Doors were left open and residents were able to wander in unchallenged by workers
who did not know them.
 Quality alterations that residents had already made to their homes were ripped out to
make way for inferior alternatives.
 Supposedly completed electrical rewiring was found to be substandard and occasionally
dangerous.
 Supposedly completed pipe works and its housing were found to be substandard.
 In some homes, odd sized radiators and kitchen unit doors had been fitted.
 Flooding in one home had been caused by an unsupervised apprentice.
 Households were left overnight without running water or a toilet.
 At least one resident was left without electricity for a whole weekend.
 Some workers were found to be abusive, bullying and inconsiderate, especially towards
elderly or otherwise vulnerable residents.

"Hodkinson carried out a qualitative survey of 14 homes refurbished by Rydon that had been the subject of a huge number of complaints. Showers were fitted next to electric fans. A toilet was installed so close to a wall that you could only sit on it sideways. Some households went for days without electricity and weeks without cooking facilities. Cupboards were fitted with wrongly size doors. Tenants who complained reported that they were treated dismissively. One remembered the site supervisor saying to him, “It ain’t Chelsea, mate.” Regenter’s out-of-hours emergency line linked to the wrong database, so callout engineers weren’t available. The striking thing was how long problems could drag out: one family’s flat was flooded in January 2014, and repairs weren’t even scheduled till September. Two years later, their flat still hadn’t been fully repaired and redecorated. Even at the most straightforward level, the work wasn’t done to a decent standard.

When approached for comment, Rydon said that since the complaints were made, three years ago, attempts have been made to remedy the problems. They said the comments were not reflective of most of the residents, and that there was a good level of satisfaction among the residents now.

For tenants with more complicated requirements, the situation was worse. The Cifuentes family, one of whom used a wheelchair, was left without ramps, hoists or any means of escape in a fire, and without a lock on the front door. Repairs were so slow and haphazard that, at one point, the family had to move out for over a month, and the disabled member could only have his needs met by going into a respite unit – whereupon they were threatened with losing their carer’s allowance, their disability allowance and their car."

Will listen later.
Remember that night for ever.

Woke up on a hot night and the radio ( LBC) were saying people were stopped on the Westway ( Flyover) watching the fire..
Had no idea what they were meaning-

I turned laptop on and couldn’t believe what was happening and how fast the fire spread.

The desperate cries for help, and a fire service struggling as liquid polystyrene rained down on them.

Google even that night showed that residents had raised concerns about potential fire risks and Grenfell, but they were ignored.

I am not surprised that fire safety inspectors were found to have a conflict of interest in the report. Something else that has arison from Grenfell is companies have actually found a way to make money from it.

The door to our flat is a self closing fire door. It was fitted in March 2019 We were the ONLY ones that co operated. Other tenants refused. Our thanks for this? We were told we would have to share the key to the cupboard of our electric meter with the druggie who lived downstairs at the time. The doors on the cupboards which house the electric meters were changed as well.

Fast forward to 2022 and our HA sent letters out saying our front doors would need to be changed to fire doors. Ours had already been done but they wouldnt accept this. DH had a heated discussion with a housing assistant who insisted it had to be changed DH pointed out that if there was something wrong with it you get the same company back to fix the mistake Not PAY ANOTHER company A different contractor was used this time. I spotted one of them in the car park told him what the HA said and he came up and took a look. "there is nothing wrong with this we cant better it" he said.
