Best U.S cities to visit without a car?(Besides NYC)

For two adults. A car isn’t an option as I can’t drive for medical reasons and the other person most definitely would not be willing to drive in the U.S(And I don’t blame them) Plus we prefer to avoid driving when we can.

It’d be our first visit to America. I think NYC might be too much for me at first as I’m autistic with neurological problems and sensory issues and I’m apprehensive enough about the trip so we may leave that for a subsequent holiday.

I’m open to almost part of the U.S though currently contemplating DC and Boston. Possibly Orlando and South Florida. Happy to use Uber and whatever public transport is available e. g Brightline.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

Washington DC
Georgetown is so lovely!!

I second Boston and Chicago.

I would fly into Boston, then get the Amtrak Acela Express to Washington (or vice versa) - two great cities, and absolutely no need for a car. That said, if I had to pick just one, I’d go with Boston.

Another vote for Boston, it is very walkable, in the way European cities are - lots of squaresand wide pavements. It is also quite small - you can even walk to Cambridge (where Harvard is) in about 40 mins.

It has a small tram/tube system that will get you to all of the suburbs and around town. It is a little grotty and old fashioned compared to UK systems but perfectly safe and useable.

As other have said you can also use Amtrak trains to get to other east coast towns and cities. We got the train from Boston to NYC and there were lots of lovely seafront towns and cities along the way.

I also think of you plan NYC carefully you should be ok and perhaps stay in one of the quieter bits of Manhattan. However I am a Londoner so have a higher than average tolerance of big city madness!

Another vote for Boston - DH lived there for two years without a car. It's a really lovely city and very nice to just walk around.

Also forgot to say the Airport in Boston (Logan) is pretty near the city centre and there is a free bus in to town.

I lived in the suburbs of Washington DC and was fine without a car! Boston and Chicago also very walkable.

San Diego
I have been twice and not drove

trams and buses and the trolley are an excellent way of getting around

very flat so easy to walk around loads to do
We used public transport to get to San Diego Zoo ocean beach. Mission beach La Jolla Sea World Coronado Island and it was dead easy and cheap to do and quick and always on time 😂

we stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt and Hilton
both right on the water front so you have everything within walking distance

we got the train the LA for one week from SD as well as and surprisingly LA was easy to get around we used public transport our base was right by grand union station
The Lowe’s hotel
we got the bus twice to Santa Monica / Venice beach and it was dead easy to do

Miami was also really easy to get around as they had free trollys that went around all the main tourist areas and the main public transport buses were really easy and cheap to use as well

Vegas geared up for walkers and excellent public transport

I’ve never driven in America or Canada
I much prefer to use public transport as you see more of your staying in a city
