If you are an amateur artist, is it conceited to hang your own art up?

I’ve just repainted the living room and am in the process of putting paintings back up, but the thought occurred to me…is this odd or egoistic to hang up my own art? It’s a mixture of other artists and my own, but as I’m quite prolific it’s definitely skewed to my own, and paintings or other forms of art cover nearly every wall of the house (again this is a mixture between my own and others). It’s rather eclectic you might say. Or is this a normal thing artists do? I have ASD and am basically a recluse so this is more of a theoretical question I suppose, as almost no one comes over and it’s just me and my husband here. He doesn’t mind whatsoever. But if someone were to come over for whatever reason, I began to wonder how this appears. Personally I enjoy seeing it, it makes me feel cosy and it’s nice to be surrounded by what I’ve made in addition to the works of others, but I also understand that my way of thinking isn’t always exactly the norm. I have quite bad anxiety including social anxiety, so it’s highly likely that this is not even an issue.

The art itself is nothing terribly unusual, mostly nature-based as that is what I enjoy, and paintings/drawings of our pets, things like that.

I don't think it's conceited at all.

Plenty of people decorate their home with items they've crafted themselves, a plumber won't call another plumber in to service their boiler etc.

Enjoy your own art!

Does it give you pleasure to look at your work? Crack on .

It would never occur to me that you were conceited, I would be jealous of your talent.😀

I think it's totally normal - lovely for you to see your pieces and remember where you were when you painted them, or what inspired you.

Definitely not.

It seems perfectly normal to me. You make art in a style you like, about things you are interested in. Of course you enjoy looking at it.

Sunbird24 · 21/08/2024 13:33

No, you’re fine! My lovely auntie was very artistic and creative, and always had some of her own gorgeous work around along with different beautiful things that she’d bought from other artists.

Your house sounds like hers, and that gives me happy cosy feelings too.

Thank you so much everyone! I tend to overthink about these kinds of things so it’s really helpful to get other people’s opinions, and I feel a lot more better now. ☺️

I know three artists. All of them display their work in their houses. Why wouldn't you?

FadedRed · 21/08/2024 14:43

No, of course it isn’t conceited 🙂. Looking around my house, there’s art, photography and crafts from all of the family here. Even stuff done at school and college which is proudly on display.
if you’ve got, then flaunt it!

Mabelface · 21/08/2024 14:44

It's mostly my stuff on my walls cos I like it 😊

Ineffable23 · 21/08/2024 18:12

My relatives have just moved house - one is an artist. We moved over 50 paintings that were too big to box up and I reckon at least another 50 that were small enough to box. Of those about 80% are their own. My house is covered in them too, I love it.

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 21/08/2024 18:30

Totally normal to display your own art work. Enjoy your new room!

IThinkAdversePossessionApplies · 21/08/2024 18:33

I've got some of my own [very] amateur artwork up at home: watercolours, cross-stitches and prints. It would only be stuck in a drawer somewhere - put it up and enjoy it!

HelenWheels · 21/08/2024 18:34

no not at all

FatmanandKnobbin · 21/08/2024 18:36

My house is full of my art and loads of stuff I've made.

I don't have people over often either, but I don't really care what anyone else thinks anyway, this is my home for me to enjoy.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 21/08/2024 18:39

Of course not!
Hang then up and enjoy them 😃

LoobyDoop2 · 21/08/2024 18:48

It’s to your taste, it’s unique and original and it says something about you. Isn’t that exactly what interiors and art snobs say you’re supposed to put on your walls?

Clueless2024 · 21/08/2024 18:49

Ofcourse not. It's advertising lol

My house is a gallery for what I’m working on, one piece often evolves to a new piece. I often work in series so its good to assist transition from one to the next. This my private home with my studio here so perfectly natural to have work here around me. All artist live and work amongst their art. I am also challenged financially so Can’t furnish entirely with art I have to buy. I often swap art with friends and always try to buy from real artists whether professional or amateur. I buy what I like and want to invest in. Don’t worry about those whom are negative. Just stay on your trajectory. If you want to develop try making a few artists studies, learn about them and try in a six inch square to explore their style. Also put your self into your own drawing school. That will develop you spatial depiction. There are lots of drawing exercises on line to try. Look at the work of Klee and Loraine Shemesh you’ll find abstraction and depiction there which is a good place to start. Wonderful colour studies in both. These exercises will start you on the journey to discover your own style. Enjoy.
