Proof of age for child tickets

I've just brought DD1 (4) on the train and the guy at the ticket booth clearly didn't believe me that she was 4. He said "hmm quite tall for four.... go on then". Fine - he let me not buy a ticket so all good.

But I was wondering, am I meant to travel with some sort of proof of age? But obviously for a four year old the only proof is her birth certificate, which I'm not keen on carrying around. Do they generally just take your word for it?

As an aside, even though she's 5 next week, she's actually really really not tall for four. She's tiny. She's in age 3 trousers today, and they aren't too short.

Just take a photo of her birth cert or passport and show it when asked

I have absolutely no idea why a photo didn't occur to me 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
