Working till midnight for minimum wage ?

I'm unemployed and have been for a week.
I have been offered a job working till midnight (but it's min wage )
I don't know if 1.i should take it just to tide me over
2.am just rushing because I hate being out of work.

I would have to walk home so that would be me getting home around 1am

Do I hold out for something better ?

Why don’t you just take it and keep looking?

TeeBee · 21/08/2024 07:58

Why not take it while looking for something better? It's not mutually exclusive.

BCBird · 21/08/2024 08:00

Walking home at midnight? Would u feel.safe doing this?

bagacross · 21/08/2024 08:03

It's the walking home bit that's making me question it.
It's 3 miles away
I think I could do it in a hour but I'm not sure if it's gonna be really exhausting doing it every day.

I would not take it, an hour walk at that time is not good. Would a taxi be possible instead? If so I would take it, though.

bagacross · 21/08/2024 08:07

@35965a yeah I could get a taxi but that would be around £18 pound

I wouldn't if I had to walk 3 miles at 1am.

Not worth getting a taxi you’d be basically working 2 hours a day for free!

sunsetsandboardwalks · 21/08/2024 08:15

Three miles alone at midnight? No, I wouldn't take it.

Shibr · 21/08/2024 08:15

Cheap bike? There are people giving them away on Facebook. I used to cycle home after a pub shift when at uni, was pretty quick.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/08/2024 08:18

Assuming you have no alternative transport like a bike that would make it less of a chore, I wouldn't bother. But I suppose it depends on the walking route. Do you think it's safe and well lit?

pointythings · 21/08/2024 08:30

My DS has a similar job but lives in a large town where buses run at that time. 3 miles that late would be a dealbreaker for me.

NoDishiForRishi · 21/08/2024 08:42

That doesn't sound safe OP, 3 miles alone at that time of night would rule it right out for me.

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/08/2024 08:59

I would not walk at that time but surely an uber is cheaper than a regular taxi. I would expect to pay about £10 in my area. I do not take them often but last one I took back from a wedding reception just after midnight was £20 and was just over six miles.

Bjorkdidit · 21/08/2024 10:02

I assume this isn't the sort of job that provides taxis or lifts home to staff members finishing late?

I wouldn't walk home alone at midnight but I would consider cycling if the route was safe - well lit and a decent cycle path not unlit country roads where you're at risk of having vehicles bombing along not paying attention as they wouldn't expect a pedestrian or cyclist to be out that late.

But obviously if you're cycling home, you need to cycle there as well so need somewhere safe to store your bike near the workplace, preferably on the premises.

Yeah, if you could get a regular Uber booking, I'd expect it to cost substantially less than £20 a time but it's still a lot to get home from a NMW job.

What's the chances of finding other work with better hours and how much do you need to find work quickly. I might take it if there were unlikely to be other options and I was running out of money otherwise I'd probably spend a few weeks looking elsewhere.

But if you're the poster who's been regularly posting with 'I've been offered this NMW job after a period of unemployment but I'm reluctant to take it for X reason' well done, I think you've come up with a scenario where you could reasonably say no.

Crunchymum · 21/08/2024 10:10

Are you the same poster who just had to quit the reception job with the dodgy shifts (working until 11pm then back on at 7am?)
