I've been on X and read some comments on Instagram about the Emmerdale storyline involving Belle and Tom. I personally have been following this storyline myself as I was in a controlling and coercive relationship 8 years ago with my DS father. I wanted to see how they portrayed it.
Tbh I think they have done an excellent job and find myself nodding and saying yes that happened to me. I also think it's great at making other women realise that it's not normal what they are experiencing. I myself only realised I was in a DA relationship after watching an advert about it. Its powerful.
However on X and Instagram there are people claiming the storyline has gone too far when Tom ran over their dog Piper. They are saying they've had enough now of this being rammed down their throats. Which I think is highly insensitive because these DA victims have to live through this stuff everyday. It's suppose to feel uncomfortable watching it because DA is not an easy subject.
People want to pretend it doesn't happen. Want to turn a blind eye because it makes them uncomfortable. The victim doesn't have that choice to do that.
Also people are saying they don't believe that the dog would be killed in real life.
It absolutely does happen and as part of a questionnaire you have to fill out with police one of the questions is around animal abuse and if they have harmed animals in front of you. It's an indicator of much more extreme abuse and puts you at higher danger if they have harmed animals.
I personally think emmerdale are doing a great job and highlighting clares law tonight was great. Alot of women don't know about this and how it works and I think it's great it's being brought to people's attention.
Sorry for the rant, I just wish people were more empathetic to this subject and would take the time to understand it and how they could support friends, family who may be going through this.
