60 things in your 60th year ...

ValleyPalley · 19/08/2024 21:34

Has anyone done this?

I'm currently compiling a list - my 60th looming fast in November

I quite like the challenge for the year, a mix of things cheap mostly with a few experiences thrown in.

What would you suggest?

So far on my list, which is totally random ....

Peter pan afternoon tea at the Shard
Learn how to draw a decent eye - I can't draw
Plant a decent amount of bulbs in the garden
Visit dungeness with my teen for a photo session
Same for skomar - pelicans
Buy a fidget ring
Help my teen pass their driving test
Declutter my wardrobe
Overhaul the flowerbed
Weekend away with siblings and parent- English heritage site or port lymph
Invest in premium bonds
Have a weekend away with teen
Declutter kitchen
Family weekend somewhere great with doggy
Plant vegetables
Buy figit rings

I turned 60 a couple of years ago, but I'm retiring next year so maybe I should nick some of them for a list then.

Same for skomar - pelicans

Puffins - but you could add St James's Park in London for pelicans.Grin

Wow 60 things is a LOT Confused
good luck!

when I turned 50, I did five new things (one for each decade Wink)

tattoo (bespoke, discreet, tasteful)
helicopter ride
learned to snowboard
trip to California
Epic party with all my friends in one room

I also did backing vocals for a song, and not long after 50, started ocean swimming

AlisonMiranda · 20/08/2024 08:39

I'm in my 50s but newly single and trying to live a more positive life. This weekend I'm going to a concert by myself, I've never done that before. I'm rewilding a part of my garden and planning to learn about wildflowers (if any grow). I'm going to try to get fit enough to jump rope for 5 minutes without a break. Like a PP, I also have to get a divorce.

BeaRF75 · 20/08/2024 08:42

I'm in my 60th year and absolutely the last thing I want is to be tied to a bloody list! I do what I want, when I want - that, to me, is the whole point of getting older.

Immemorialelms · 20/08/2024 08:44

I like the idea of 6 things one per decade, or sixty hours through the year of spending on yourself in a quality way. That's one to two hours per week.

GinToBegin · 20/08/2024 08:58

I’d aim for sixty things in your sixties, but some could be ongoing.

Write one letter a month
Read one book a month
See one film a month
Do voluntary work
Visit one new UK place a year
Take one overseas trip a year
Make/update your will
Consider making a power of attorney
Learn a foreign language/improve one you already know.
Declutter your clothes - donate or sell
Declutter your paperwork
Have a digital declutter
Clear of the Cupboard of Neglect

Fifthtimelucky · 20/08/2024 08:58

Wish I'd thought of this when I turned 60 but it was during Covid so opportunities were rather limited!

OP: if you are thinking of visiting Skomer, off the coast of Wales, it will be puffins you will hope to see, not pelicans. Make sure you go at the right time of year!

Scissorsisters · 20/08/2024 11:03

Google to see what was iconic 60 years ago and pick something related.
Mary Poppins movie was released - see the stage musical
Pop Tarts were invented so eat one
And so on.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 20/08/2024 12:10

My 50th birthday present to myself was gym membership with a personal trainer to get me into weightlifting. Hugely recommended.

ValleyPalley · 20/08/2024 15:22

Skomer - well, err, yeah, I did mean Puffins

A bit concerned I wrote pelicans to be honest 🤣🤦‍♀️🤪

Edited because auto bloody correct .....

What is a fidget ring?!

It's a ring that has moveable parts that you can twist/spin to help you if you are nervous/anxious/ stressed. It can help some people to concentrate in the moment. Here is a web site that sells some lovely ones made from silver.

i wish I’d thought of that! I have one month left until I turn 61 but in that year I’ve done a Master’s degree, become a grandmother and taught myself to knit again (after 50 years) so I could make a gift for my new grandchild. Oh and I danced in Vienna! Not 60 things but it’s been a good year!

That's amazing. Maybe you should make a list of 60 amazing things you did after turning 60 instead of things you ought to do. Sounds like you clock them up without thinking about it.

Dancing in Vienna though...wow!

JaninaDuszejko · 20/08/2024 16:15

60 in a year is far too much and some of these suggestions would make it a very expensive year.

That said here's some smaller ones:
Plant a tree or rose or bulbs in the garden
Read a book written in the place you go on holiday that year
Buy something second hand for the house
Buy a preloved outfit
Listen to a podcast on a subject you know nothing about - get someone else to suggest something
Update your hairstyle/colour
Learn how to repair something that is broken or doesn't work properly in your house
Propagate some cuttings from a plant in your garden or house and give the resulting plants away
Arrange to meet up with an old friend(s) you've not seen recently
Offer to babysit for a relative or friend or neighbour with a young child
Make a photobook or calendar or get some photos framed
Sign up to an evening class you've always wanted to try
Try a new recipe
Plant some bulbs in a bowl for some spring colour

I'd be tempted to cut it down to 6 things, one for each decade.

I like that list, I think they're more achievable.

Seeing the Northern lights was always on the list but managed to see them in my own back garden this year so that is ✔️.

My contribution is pick a European city you've always wanted to go to and travel there by train. Must include a night train.

Pippatpip · 20/08/2024 17:19

I too am going to be 60 soon. 1964 was clearly a good year. I thought about doing this but as another poster has pointed out it is a lot and feels stressful. I already have a lot in my life with full time work, etc so something else that I HAVE to do seems counterintuitive and anxiety making. Perhaps just living for the moment and being grounded for 60 minutes per day or week might be of benefit to me.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 20/08/2024 17:33

cupcaske123 · 19/08/2024 22:23

Go Scuba diving
Throw A Tomato At La Tomatina
Spend A Night In An Igloo Village
See the Northern lights
Learn another language
Climb a mountain
Go to Oktoberfest
Go to the Edinburgh festival
See a rock band
See the Giant's Causeway
Go kayaking
Sleep under the stars
Visit Stone Henge
Go Cheese Rolling at Cooper’s Hill
Go To A Christmas Market
Go to a drive in movie
Go to Longleat
Sing At A Karaoke
See The Colosseum
Learn to juggle
Fly a kite

This is more like a bucket list - things to do in your sixties perhaps .

I think it depends a lot on whether you are working or not . For anyone who has retired then a list of activities you would like to do or places you want to visit is useful to ensure you don't just sit there on the sofa watching Netflix!

Tillygan60 · 20/08/2024 17:40

That would be SO stressful for me, having a list that long that I had to complete!
Really its just a bucket list....

Dontcallmescarface · 20/08/2024 17:49

I'd add recreating the final "splurge" scene from Bugsy Malone. It looks like so much fun and I so want to do it.

Turophilic · 20/08/2024 17:50

Bloody hell, I’d have to win the lottery to afford some of these lists!

StormingNorman · 20/08/2024 18:04

Watch a film from the year you were born.
Ditto reading a book from the year you were born.

Kangarude · 20/08/2024 18:14

I will also be 60 this year. Decluttering my kitchen would most certainly not be on my list! I don’t have a list but the plans that I do have all revolve around socialising and holidays 😂

HelenWheels · 20/08/2024 19:48

i am 60 next year so looking at these ideas.
because i am nearly 60 Grin
see a friend not seen for a while is a good start!

caringcarer · 20/08/2024 22:34

Romeiswheretheheartis · 19/08/2024 21:53

That's a good idea, it's mine too in Oct, not that I really want to think about it!

I tried to teach myself to crochet this year but it was harder than I expected.

I was 60 in lockdown so no party. I did learn to crochet though. I did waffle stitch from YouTube. I made a baby blanket.

backinthebox · 21/08/2024 00:41

Omg - the idea of a to do list with 60 things on it is my idea of hell! And what sort of fun is writing your will, arranging PoA, decluttering your life, etc? Necessary things, but if someone suggested to me I do these things as a way of celebrating 60 years in this life I would think them mad - why not just hammer home the point ‘you’re old, start getting ready to die!’ I truly hope I am just beginning a new chapter at that age, one without the responsibilities of children and work, where I can choose the direction my life takes me without being held to a list of things I must complete.

I much prefer the idea of one big achievement. The poster completing a Masters degree probably didn’t have time for planting hundreds of bulbs or tidying kitchen cupboards, but what an amazing accomplishment, at any age! I hope to celebrate my 60s by planning and executing a series of epic long distance horse rides. And possibly writing a book (or 2.) You can’t do those sort of things in an afternoon - they take time and leave an imprint on your life. A far better thing to do one big thing that changes you for the better imo than a series of pointless little things that anyone could do just so you can say you did 60 things.

And yes, write a will - everyone should have one. But fgs don’t make it part of you birthday celebration!

Allthehorsesintheworld · 21/08/2024 01:37

Hot air balloon flight.
Go down a cave ( Cheddar, Blue John type caves, not just a random cave you might get stuck in 😁)
Make a piece of jewellery
Buy school lunch for 60 kids somewhere in the world via Mary’s Meals. Not as expensive as you might think.
Donate 60 items to a food bank , human or pet.
