Is this a sign of aging?

My knees hurt when I try to get up off the floor, abd I feel like I just don't have the strength. My hips feel sore and stiff, for example if I lay on my back, feet fkat knees bent, I can't open my knees very far.

I'm (just) 47!!

I walk a lot, and have started skipping (slow start, it's hard!)

Can anyone recommend something for strength and flexibility? I'm time limited, and a bit fat (work in progress on the fatness)

Pilates? Yoga? Any free YouTube stuff that's good?

Pilates and weight training

I'm 53. I go to an early morning weights class three times a week, which is largely full of 40/50 something mums trying to stay strong and flexible as they get older. The camaraderie is great, the trainer is excellent. It's not at all massive weights and testosterone. It's at 6.15-7 am; I walk into my kitchen, put the kettle on and start turfing teenagers out of bed at 7.15 just as I would normally.

I also do Pilates once a week. I don't know if this is beneficial on top of the weights, but I enjoy it.

Thank you. Should have said, I can't go to a gym or classes, I'm a single parent, live rurally.

So needs to be at home. I've got some weights so will start with those.

HRT, keep up the walking, maybe add in some weights and pilates if time and finances allow it.

You can look at YouTube for some weight training and mat pilates, so you don't necessarily have to pay for classes.

I'm 41 and have caught myself starting to make old man noises when getting up off the floor, so I've started doing exercises for flexibility. I'd imagine I'm fighting a losing battle though.

Last week I also had "a bit of a fall" for the first time. I didn't fall over, it was definitely "having a fall"

SummerSplashing · 19/08/2024 11:32

@Bemyclementine

yes loads on line. Do you use FB? I don't but get sent 'reeks' from friends and on r you watch one or two you'll get loads!! I'm going to book an appointment with a physio who specialises in this kind of thing, I watched some of his YouTube & when I found out he's fairly local (genuine, not an 'in your area type thing' just to make sure I'm doing the best exercises for me & doing them properly.

i wish I'd done more about it when I was your age & stage. I'm 55 now & my knees are fucked! I can't kneel on them at all & they feel inflamed all the time & ache and sometimes really hurt on the bone at the side. I went to the GP a fair few years ago (8 maybe) but was basically fobbed off with 'it's your age' & a 6 session course of physio with the local useless physio,

I have other heath issues so everything is blamed on that, then ignored, this bloke has given me a little hope I can improve them & protect them a bit,

wish I'd found him sooner though.

When I was 45-46 I had knee and hip pain/stiffness. Was sent for X-rays etc and told it was normal wear and tear. Started HRT aged 47 and pain much reduced, I've also started weights at home, some good age appropriate work outs on you tube.

YellowphantGrey · 19/08/2024 11:36

Yoga by Adrienne on you tube is good. You could pick one a day to do.

Get a walking pad, weights and bands and find different exercise vids on YouTube. It's important now to exercise for strength and not for weight loss and ensure you remain supple and strong

Im 62 not fit at all and I can spread my bent knees so they touch the floor. Pilates - you don't need to go to class - there are loads online.
As for lenes - mine hurt if I kneel but think that's because I'm overweight!

Bemyclementine · 19/08/2024 18:22

Thanks all. I've looked up Adriene and am going to give the beginners videos a go.

Honestly it’s more a sign of getting fatter than aging. As soon as I put on a few kg on the belly, bad knees. Lose it, no knee problems!

If you have pain that you don't think you should have, its worth checking to see if you are overloaded with oxalates.

This was me.

Just eat meat for a month and only drink water. If you have an oxalate problem, as soon as you stop eating stuff with it in, you will start to dump it from your tissues and that is usually via your urine first. If you get bladder pain and cloudy urine, you have your answer.

If you want to know more, look up Sally K Norton on YT. She was crippled, literally bedridden as a result of oxalates but they are behind an awful lot of physical problems and people don't realise this.

I have dumped loads of oxalates. It took me over a year but I am physically much healthier and I limit massively my intake of oxalate laden foods now.

Bemyclementine · 19/08/2024 19:42

@Wombbaalaa there is also that! The weight is slowly shifting.

Menopause hormones bugger you up. My mum says she felt fitter at 60 than she did at 45, because the hormone roller coaster had stopped!

UnaOfStormhold · 19/08/2024 19:52

It's more likely a sign that you're not moving enough or in the right ways to keep your body healthy - people's ability to move does diminish with age but most people are getting there decades before they actually need to. Have a look at the book Built to Move by Kelly and Juliet Starrett - there's an taster here: thereadystate.com/trs_podcast/built-to-move-health-habits/

Mapletreelane · 19/08/2024 19:53

Pilates is amazing! I'm 50 and it has been amazing for my back and hips and general posture. I have more flexibility now than I did in my 30s. I do an online class, she does loads of classes a week of different lengths and sends them out as recordings, so you can join a live class or just do the recording whenever is convenient. DM me if you want further details. But can't recommend it enough.

fussychica · 19/08/2024 20:18

I do a full programme of stretching and weights exercises every morning to keep me moving and aches and pains away. I also go to zumba twice a week. I still take low dose HRT which definitely helped. I'm nearly 68 and don't creak anymore than I did 10 years ago!
Glad you've found something suitable online, I'm sure you'll make good progress if you keep the exercises up.
