Would you do anything about this creepy woman?

I live in an apartment block and have a ring camera.

Just now, a dishevelled woman came into my dead end hallway, filming around on her phone including mine and my 2x neighbour’s doors. She rings my doorbell then legs it to the doorway of the hallway. She’s propped that door open in a bizarre way (like switching between different yoga poses) and is staring angrily at my camera.

After a minute my doorbell leaves an automated message (intended for parcel delivery drivers, saying to leave the parcel outside). She then runs into the hallway and starts banging on my door hard and runs back to the hallway doorway.

She waits around for a few minutes messing with the hallway door. Then she shouts “hello you not gonna open?” and is just staring at the camera. You can hear my neighbours stirring, and she runs off and goes down the stairs.

I know nothing happened but I found it quite odd and wondering what you would do? I have clear footage of her and have saved it. Just wondering if it’s worth sharing somewhere, or just archiving in case she returns! I have never seen her before. I got the camera because weird things like this have happened before, but now I have footage I don’t know what to do with it!

Sounds like drugs. Do not open the door.

theduchessofspork · 19/08/2024 00:59

Yes, report it to the police. She clearly has mental health issues, they may know who she is.

I can’t believe you didn’t call them while she was there! Not 999, but you can call your local station.

Actually I’d call them now, if they aren’t too busy they will radio it out and someone might pick her up.

CalicoPusscat · 19/08/2024 01:07

I'd be weirded out. Do you know how she got into the apartment block?

Fraaahnces · 19/08/2024 01:10

Do you have an apartment FB group? Maybe ask if anyone else has had their doorbells rung by a confused elderly woman on X date…. She doesn’t seem well. Have video footage of her if she is known to anyone and it could be helpful let you know? She could be a lost/confused relative.

CalicoPusscat · 19/08/2024 01:13

OP didn't say she was elderly, just scruffy.

@creepywoman you have the footage, I'd talk to the neighbours first about it.

hazandduck · 19/08/2024 01:36

Have you lived there long? If you haven’t lived there very long maybe she knew the person who lived there before but I still wouldn’t answer the door! As others have said, I’d report to police.

To be honest I wondered if I would be wasting police time by contacting them over this as nothing really happened. I was half asleep and barely processing what was going on when she initially came

No, there’s a locked gate but sometimes people leave it open. There’s airbnbs etc in some of the apartments so people are always coming and going!

No, we used to have a WhatsApp group but half of the people in it have moved out and the chat has fizzed out.

She isn’t elderly at all, I’d probably say 30s-40s, she was not really looking lost or confused. She was wizzing around, recording things on her phone, being quite aggressive

Thanks, I have lived here for 3 years and it’s a new build apartment complex - I was the first person to move in so definitely no one here before me.

I actually wonder if she had a problem with the camera or something as she was really focused on it

Save the footage. She could be taking video for others, to see who has an easy door to break into and trying to get you to come out so she can see who answers and if it's a massive bloke maybe you don't get a burglary later. Of course she's annoyed by the camera if you're planning a burglary you don't want your face on camera.

From your description she sounds unwell or high - not just a neighbour who doesn’t like cameras.

You aren’t wasting police time at all - if you call the local station they’ll take a look at it when they can.

CalicoPusscat · 19/08/2024 01:48

She definitely sounds a bit off her head - don't worry about it tonight, unless she comes back in which case I'd be tempted to call police.

Hopefully that's it but it would be good to keep the neighbours informed tomorrow (well, later today!).

Gilbertwasawuss · 19/08/2024 02:17

Definitely save the footage and I would also leave a note on the communal door or elevator asking if anyone else has had any weird experiences and give an email address for them to contact you on (I would make a new one specifically for this for safety.)

Longsight2019 · 19/08/2024 03:38

Maybe turn the not very smart smart responses off as they are annoying.

Have you had a scroll back in your event timeline in the app to see if she’s been near your door previously?

I've got a couple of very nosey elderly female neighbours in my Cul De Sac. One of them especially hates Ring Cameras. I have 3 outside cameras. Front, Back, Porch.. not peering onto anyone's property but trained on my own, two of the cameras swivel to follow you. I would probably make a non Emergency Report, particularly as she was filming the other doorways.. I would also make sure your Ring Camera is secure to your property. My friend has a violent neighbour and she has had to put security cameras up for safety, he spray painted the lenses to destroy them. Be careful and make a Report.
