my daughter has got a 50 pence which is for sale on eBay For £8000 - £9900. BUT also Google is saying that it's value is £3.50! 🤷🏼‍♀️

How do you find the value of a 'rare' coin?

TIA

People can list things for any price they want on Ebay, but the only price that matters is the sold price.

Which 50p is it?

Some are definitely worth more, like Kew Gardens, but even then it's only £150 or so.

Edited - Spelling error.

It's worth 50p ffs. Ebay is the work of fantasists. Look at sold prices instead if you must.

cookiebee · 18/08/2024 15:58

Exactly as said earlier, set your eBay listings to look at sold prices, but yeah 50p should be worth 50p, if you see the same type sold for more, then fair enough try to get more if you like.

its funny how humans, with the right hype can make absolutely anything desirable, but greed can get the better of everyone, this isn’t me getting at you by the way OP. I’m an 80s kid and I collected garbage pail kid stickers when I was a kid, and of course I stuck them on my bedroom door and they were scraped off when my dad decorated, so I didn’t have any left. As an adult I went on eBay looking for some, I got a few for a reasonable price, but greedy collectors have made a whole industry out of it, it’s ridiculous. Grading their condition then selling them off at a massive profit. I just wanted to look at them/handle them and enjoy the memories, not keep them in an airtight container never to be seen again. There are newer items as well, models etc, I would have loved to own a few, but again they are bought in bulk, graded then sold for huge amounts before someone like me can get even one for retail price.

I collect vintage LPs as well, but I go for the cheaper dog eared ones because I just want to enjoy them. Sorry bit of a rant about the collectors market there, by all means join in and sell it on OP, or release it back into the wild to fulfil its destiny as currency.

collectors of stuff are a bit obsessive aren't they

we absolutely would take advantage of that if someone has £10,000 that they are willing and able to waste on a 50 pence coin! I see it as a redistribution of wealth 😁

This happens with medals. Stupid people Inexperienced sellers put on amazingly high valuations in the hope that some fool will make them a high offer (but not as high as the asking price) thinking they have got themselves a bargain if it's accepted.

Usually it's for common or garden stuff seldom worth as much as £20.

Some modern coins are worth more than the rest , especially if they are a special edition. HOWEVER, they need to be in mint uncirculated condition.
(DDad had thousands of coins. He was a collector and did all the antique and specialist fairs. )

Unless it’s a Kew Gardens 50p, it’s probably not worth very much. An Olympic in good condition might be worth a tenner, but it’s likely not worth much at all.

Jumping on this thread in case anyone knows where/how to get coins valued.

I have some old coins which I have accumulated over the last 40 years or so, including various old UK and foreign coins.

Is there eg an app which might reliably let me know if any of them are worth more than their face value?

Gineveryday · 07/11/2024 11:45

Some Beatrix potter ones can be worth a bit too but no where near the level you are thinking

i collect 50ps which one is it out of interest ?

I’ve been in the same boat with coins before! It can be really confusing, especially when there’s such a huge difference in price. I’d recommend checking a few trusted sources to get a better idea of its actual value, like a reputable coin dealer or online coin valuation sites. When I was looking to sell an old coin, I also used an online tool to figure out how many dimes is a quarter to understand its value in comparison. It was super helpful, and I was able to get a better estimate before listing it for sale.
