Drawn towards an afternoon snooze - early 60's

I hate waking up in the morning!

It takes me several coffees and a good couple of hours before I feel in any way civilised and part of the human race.

I have noticed that as I age (currently 61) I feel more and more drawn to a siesta in the afternoon. I'm currently fighting it as I don't want to have to 'wake up' twice a day!

Dh thinks I'm nuts. He can sleep anywhere, anytime with no ill effects.

Should I keep fighting or is this an inevitable sign of aging?

I’ve always loved an afternoon nap, just roll with it op 😴

Woollypullover · 17/08/2024 22:12

I'm in my forties and love a good afternoon nap!

Snowflake2 · 17/08/2024 22:13

Unless you're drinking every night so it's actually a hangover every morning or you're staying up playing computer games until you're exhausted, then you sound ill so I'd get checked out. Maybe lose weight if you need to and eat healthier and start a fitness program if you don't already do these things, because they can impact energy levels. Most people of early 60s are still working full time, it's not normal to feel like shite for hours every morning and need an afternoon nap too as well as a good night's sleep. You could have sleep apnoea, thyroid problems or any number of things making you tired.

Supersimkin7 · 17/08/2024 22:13

Do it. Lovely.

Patatochake · 17/08/2024 22:14

If you can nap go for it! I can’t sleep anywhere unless in bed in the dark

husband can sleep upright in the front set of car and he’s tiptop afterwards

would be lovely to have an afternoon zzz

DoTheRoary · 17/08/2024 22:15

@Snowflake2 😂 I'm healthy, eat well, never have hangovers and I struggle to feel awake in the morning!

@EnergyEmoji I love an afternoon nap! Embrace them if you have the time for them.

Pastafortea · 17/08/2024 22:15

I feel worse after a daytime nap but do it if it suits you.

pinkgown · 17/08/2024 22:16

I remember my parents in the afternoon having "forty winks".

Devilsmommy · 17/08/2024 22:18

Late 30s and I love an afternoon nap😁 though I'm a night owl so that's why I'm shit in the morning 😂

spiderdave · 17/08/2024 22:18

I'm early 30s and you've described how I feel every day Grin

Embrace it! Naps are great!

Chocolateorange22 · 17/08/2024 22:18

I wonder as you have that niggly worry about fighting it whether to just ask your GP for a blood test for peace of mind. Just to rule out any deficiencies or thyroid issues which are common in post menopausal women. My FIL used to fall asleep during the day, turned out that he had sleep apnea. Absolutely fine now he has a CPAP machine and has more stamina than me in my 30's.

Feeling sluggish in the morning can be a sign of sleep apnea. My DH who is early 39's has just been diagnosed with it. His morning headaches have gone and he just dives out of bed raring to go

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 17/08/2024 22:22

I absolutely love an afternoon nap. I hate how there are always posters suggesting you must be ill if you like to nap on these sort of threads.

Today I was up at 5.55 and in the swimming pool for 6.30. I did 45 lengths. I then walked the dog for two hours and cleaned the house top to bottom. At 3pm I had a snooze for 50 minutes... I don't think I could be accused of being lazy or having a medical condition.

What is your wake up routine OP? Would it help if you got straight in the shower or tried going for a quick walk to wake up?

cariadlet · 17/08/2024 22:25

DP and I are in our 50s, both love a weekend afternoon nap and have done for years.
It's mostly catching up on work days when we often get too little sleep.

I just have to be careful not to sleep too long if I have a siesta, otherwise I'm not tired when actual bedtime comes around and then my sleep pattern is all over the place.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2024 22:29

I'm not a napper, but my DF had a short (15 -20 mins) after-lunch nap. That - not going to sleep for hours - may benefit some people.

RaininSummer · 17/08/2024 22:32

Not sure if I would like that as I always wake up groggy but I know for a fact my manager wouldn't. It may be a thing though as in my last job we did find a lovely older colleague asleep with head on desk.

Oblomov24 · 17/08/2024 22:33

Love an afternoon nap.

00BonneMaman00 · 17/08/2024 22:54

Love a nap! Late 40's here 😆

tuttuttutt · 17/08/2024 22:55

I'm 39 and love a nap. I'd nap every day if I could. Have since I was a teen

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 17/08/2024 22:56

I'm 43 and can get up at 10am on my days off, and be guaranteed to be back in bed 4 hours later for a snooze. It's brilliant 😁

They weren't "sleeping" 🤣🙈🤭😮🫣

Early 50s. Love an afternoon nap. Would do it every day if I could!

lovemycbf · 17/08/2024 23:06

@pinkgown I know the definition of forty winks 🤣😅
It was a thing called humour

longdistanceclaraclara · 17/08/2024 23:06

I'm 40, love an afternoon nap if I get the chance

You never know these days if a phrase has gone out of common knowledge 😀. It used to annoy me like crazy as a child; I know I was meant to be quiet, but I can't remember what I used to do...
