MG cars- yes or no

In desperate need of a new car. Usually buy 3 year old and keep them 3-4 years then trade.

I can get a brand new MG for less than the price of a used car and am tempted. It’s got more kit inside, feels okay to drive. I don’t need anything flash just decent enough and with warranty.

Does anyone have one? Would you recommend?

Thankyou.

Hi . I found this thread as I’m considering buying and Mg4 Trophy extended range. I’m retiring so need a car to ‘ see me through ‘ and my lease car has to go back. I’ve been shocked at the price of second hand cars these days - I’ve leased for work reasons for years. I see that Blue Light gets great discounts on This car and was minded to buy one. Reviews seem good. It’s got a better range of 250 thank the Volkswagen e.up that I have now so less range anxiety. The comments on build quality and parts and odd radio features that I’ve just read have put me off.
can anyone Shed any light on this debate ? I was literally going to order the car today and thought I’d look at Mumsnet for added insight ….
thanks all

I haven’t got that model but I did buy an MG in the end. I got a 2024 plate for the price of a 3-4 year old Nissan.

Havent noticed any problems as yet. I only plan to keep it 2-3 years and then upgrade though so wasn’t too worried about long term. It drives almost the same as my VW, maybe slightly underpowered but nothing to write home about.

They are so common here, every second car is an MG.

We have an ev mg4 as it’s all we could get in the timescale needed when we got it. It’s actually quite good and very cheap to run. Good range and charges fast.

We've got an MG4 Trophy (but also a petrol car for longer journeys). Once I got the hang of the infotainment, and remembered to turn lane keeping assistant off every time I get in the car, it's been good. It's only leased, because I'm hoping at the end of the lease there will be more availability of decent mid-range electric cars. I don't think I'd buy an electric car at the moment as the depreciation is just too big.

A word of warning, the insurance is surprisingly high, which I think reflects that if it goes wrong, it goes disastrously wrong (but also, rarely goes wrong!).

I charge on a cheap tariff at home overnight (Octopus), and its first service was super cheap - about £50!

All in all, a thumbs up from me.

Thanks all - I’m just getting insurance quotes which do seem to be expensive

Hi all - we’ve been to look at the mg ev 4 trophy and had a drive . That is fine. The issue for me as an (ahem) 65 year old is that there are very few buttons. Everything is done by a touchscreen which feels counter intuitive after 40 years plus of driving and distracting. How do mg ev drivers feel about this ? I can back thinking not for me but the price is SO good? Thoughts? Thank you

Well it certainly can't be any worse for reliability than a Nissan so if you got a brand new Mg for the pace of a 3-4 year old Nissan I would call that a good deal. If it's on PCP and you didn't put much in you can hand it back at the end anyway if not depreciates loads. And hopefully the parts shouldn't be an issue as it's so new anyway. I would say it was a good choice I think. I would have also considered Kia (although not as cheap) as others have mentioned. Also don't believe the crap about having to have it serviced at MG for the warranty, it just has to be a VAT reg garage using OEM parts.
