Can anyone recommend a great place to live in Wales. We want to be in a town and within an hour of a city. Nearish to beaches. I know North wales but need help with South. Anyone any tips please? Ta

It must have had the reputation for the worst car crime city in the 80's too. I left in the early 80's but remember my dad telling me that about car crime several years before I left.

Sorry op for the de-rail :).

Moved to near Abergavenny a few years ago. Don't, unless you are Welsh. They really don't like the English...

Really?? It's very close to the border and is seen as quite an English-influenced place.

Billyandharry · 18/08/2024 19:27

Thanks for all the info. Schools not relevant - kids will have flown the nest by the time we move.x i hear what you're saying about NHS but hey...It's pretty crap in certain parts of England too.x

My dad’s GP wanted to diagnose a potential hernia in his groin over the phone. My dad is deaf (and in his late 70s). They eventually agreed to an in-person appt and said they would put him on the urgent list for surgery, and that he should expect to have a date for it in 7 years……..

I know a woman who lives in Pembrokeshire, right by the beach. Her photos are lovely. I think property is reasonable on the west coast.

This is what I hear too. My cousin lives there, he’s from northern England, loves it.

BeEasyonYourself · 18/08/2024 20:52

I have a few friends living in Pembroke which is lovely and has lots of fun stuff to do, whether with kids or as a night out. Also close to Bosherston which is an amazing beach!

BeEasyonYourself · 18/08/2024 20:54

Oh I see kids will have flown the nest. My friends moved there pre-kid and just found it a brilliant place to live.

My friend has been told 5 year wait for her knee replacement and my uncle has been waiting years for a cataract and no date yet in sight (no pun intended). My aunt paid privately for her hip surgery in the end. They are now thinking of moving into England mainly because they have multiple health issues which are not being addressed. They compare notes with my parents who moved out of Wales 2 years ago and the difference is very noticeable. DF would probably be dead by now had he stayed in Wales.

The Welsh NHS is in really dire straits. I come under Betsi Cadwalader and have told DP that if I ever require emergency treatment, he's to drive me over the border into England.

Cardiff prices are high - you might get something in Llantwit Major (seaside village) for 240k - it's about a 40 min drive to the city.

You'll get more for your money further west. What about Kidwelly/Llansteffan, on the beach and Carmarthen is a decent sized town and approx 30 mins away

This is nice in Tenby. Lovely quaint seaside town in Pembrokeshire

I adore Tenby but it’s heaving when the sun shines/during the summer and a total nightmare to park. :-/

MinnieMountain · 19/08/2024 07:25

Agreed @DeclutteringNewbie . Ditto St David’s which someone mentioned above (not that you’d get a house for £260,000 there).

prairiedog2024 · 19/08/2024 09:15

I'm in Swansea. I travel around south and west wales a fair bit.

I do like Swansea. The town isn't great but we travel to Cardiff for a day out in town and in Swansea we have lots of out of town shopping areas.

Your budget would be good for Swansea, in my area on east Swansea you'd be able to get a detached bungalow with three bed for 200,000 or less.

Happy to advise if you let me know the type of lifestyle and things you're wanting.

massistar · 19/08/2024 09:33

Swansea city centre is really run down. I try and avoid it and go to Cardiff for shopping. They are trying with the new Arena etc though.

I live in mumbles and you will be hard pushed to find anything for that budget. Maybe a tiny cottage with no parking. And trust me you want parking here in the summer. But you might get something a bit further out in West Cross or Sketty. Uplands is nice too but prices creeping up there too as people are pushed out of Mumbles.

My son moved to Mumbles earlier this year. He knows the area well as years ago he lived in Newton. Then he moved to Cardiff for University and then came back and was in Pennard/Parkmill but he is glad he now lives in Mumbles.

@BrakesOff BLOODY HELL DO YOU NEED A NAP OR SOMETHING? I'm just asking people for ideas and inspiration- then getting in my car and doing some research. Spent many a rainy 70's holiday in North wales just thinking about the South because it looks gorgeous and near older relatives in Bristol. Is that ok with u?
Thanks to all the none grumpy Welsh folk (or whoever) for their ideas and suggestions.

I'd suggest not far from either of the bridges, then, probably the Prince of Wales bridge. Villages nearby with new house building and easy access to Bristol.

Abergavenny is lovely.

Chepstow is pretty, but a bit isolated IMO.

Avoid Newport at all costs - but I can see nobody has suggested that anyway!

I know people who live in Neath near Swansea and they like it, close access to the mumbles.

Cardiff is nice, but the best areas are very expensive.

Barry is right by the coast, but can be a bit rough in parts.

Chepstow is pretty, but a bit isolated IMO.
Chepstow is not isolated, it's central for M4, M5, easy to get to Bristol, Cardiff, Abergavenny, Gloucester and places further afield.

A long way to the coast though and it does get gridlocked at rush hours.

I find it isolated because I don’t drive.
Also it only has the community hospital. I’m not a big fan of Chepstow there’s not much there, It’s just pretty to me.
