Parking across driveway.

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 16/08/2024 23:55

Not me but what to do in this situation.

The neighbours in the house across from us have started parking their car across the entry to their driveway (dropped kerb). .

I have always reversed into my drive by using the part of the footpath in front of their driveway but I can't do this anymore.

I have started to drive in but then I can't back out. I can't turn left or right as there are other cars parked on both sides of the road in front of every other house too. Previously I could edge/turn around by using the path in front of the neighbours to turn slowly.

I know they don't have to use their driveaway and can park across their driveways but how do I get out of my driveway. What am I missing?

Because there are cars parked on both sides of the road, the road is barely passable for one car. There isn't room for large trucks including for example the bin trucks but we can work around that by bringing the bins to the bottom of the road.

I'm not blocked in as I can obviously manage to drive in but I'm so anxious trying to get out that I think I must be missing something. How do other people manage this?

Diagram please. Are they blocking the footpath?

CherryVanillaPie · 16/08/2024 23:59

I think they'll be parking across their drive because they're struggling to see out of their drive when pulling out themselves. Parking across their drive means they can get out quickly and easily with good visibility using their wing mirror. Maybe people are overlapping their drive?

TickingAlongNicely · 17/08/2024 00:00

You need to.go back and forth, turning a bit each time until you are free. Like any tight turn really.

They aren't blocking the path. There is a grass verge between the houses and road, They are parking on the road in front of the entrance to their driveway. There are cars parked outside every other house but they are all parked to the left and right of driveways.

I could not get out today. It was frustrating as I tried for ages. As there are cars parked on my side of the road to the right and left of me and now three cars parked in a row across the already narrow road, I tried to get out for ages but couldn't manage it.

The only solution I can think of is to park across my own drive?

Yes, do that. Then you can get out easier. If you can't beat them join them.

friendlycat · 17/08/2024 00:17

The simplest thing would be to approach them in a friendly manner and explain your problem.

TheFlis · 17/08/2024 00:18

I can’t picture a situation where you need to drive on an opposite pavement in order to reverse onto your drive!

Why does the ability for the OP's neighbours to move away, (and have 'good visibility,') trump the OP's ease of manoeuvring in and out of her driveway?

So these people are making life easier for themselves and to hell with everyone else?!

Sadly, I have encountered selfish ignorant twats like the people opposite you @Greigeisthelatestbeige who don't give a shit about anyone else.

Basically people who park on the road, when they have their own empty driveway, are the worst kind of people. Absolute selfish arseholes.

I would talk to them tomorrow. Tell them if they continue to leave it there, you may crash into it. (And if they do leave there, maybe you should!)

stormstormystormstorm · 17/08/2024 00:23

Don't you know the rules OP?

There are cars parked outside every house on both sides of a narrow road. Our neighbour's side mirror has been taken off numerous times because (bigger) cars find it too tight to get past..

Neighbour on same side as me is a tradesperson (and much better at driving and parking than me) also uses the drive opposite his house to reverse into his own drive as its a tight sqeeze.

As I said, people might be overlapping their drive so they can't get out? They won't have started parking across their drive for the fun of it. After all it pushes up their insurance premiums and puts their car at more risk.

Sometimes it's better to try and understand why people have done something or ask them. Rather than going round threatening to crash into them and work yourself into a fury calling them "selfish ignorant twats /who don't give a shit about anyone else /the worst kind of people / Absolute selfish arseholes" 😄

Cheaper to be parked on the road now as it makes it harder for thieves to work out which house the keys are in.

PassingStranger · 17/08/2024 00:49

It's illegal to block someone in
If they don't respond ask the police to tell them.

I have just realised I didn't say that they have three cars. They have room to park two cars (in a row) on their drive without having either car on the footpath but I fully understand why this isn't convenient for them. (Our driveway is too short to do this).

Most houses park one car in their drive and the other outside their house (not in front of their drive).

They park one on the drive, another across their driveway and I don't know where they park the third car.

(They always used our driveway before when reversing out of their own driveway which is why I'm surprised they don't realise or care why parking across their own driveway entrance impacts others).

Am I blocked in though or am I just a shit driver who can't manage to get out safely?

They are parking across their own driveway, that's not illegal. They aren't blocking themselves in.

Galoop · 17/08/2024 03:09

I don't understand how you can't get out your own driveway, surely you just drive out the turn left or right onto the road? Sometimes if it's tight it might require a 3 or even 6 point turn. But it shouldn't really be that tight even if a car is parked opposite your drive? I'm confused 😕

I can no longer reverse in, there isn’t room to turn the car around enough so I am driving in (not very easily either) and reversing out.

There are cars at both sides of my drive on my side and cars parked opposite. I’m finding it very difficult to reverse out though although if I can make it in I should be able to get out. Maybe part of the problem is I’m already nervous backing out as people walk on the path and small kids run up and down. have very limited visibility and I don’t have a reverse camera.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 17/08/2024 04:13

My understanding is that it's a narrow road to begin with which is why it's so tight with cars parked. Can someone act as banksman for you so you can reverse in to your drive? What kind of car do you drive - is it big? From your posts it sounds a very busy area.

I'd speak to the neighbour though, there has to be a solution.

WutheringMights · 17/08/2024 04:42

Can you apply to your local council for a dropped kerb extension op? I know this would cost money but it would give you extra space to manoeuvre off your drive because the cars parked either side of it would be further back giving you more wriggle room.

Omlettes · 17/08/2024 05:02

Why cant you just tell them politely and come to a solution?
I dont understand this unwillingness to be direct, it just breeds stress and resentment and wastes time.

Marshmallowtoastie · 17/08/2024 05:48

Well logically, If there’s space to get in there’s space to get out, so I don’t think you can ask people to park differently because of your skill level
(and I don’t mean that rudely, you may need to be a very very good driver to navigate that road!)
is there anyone that can guide you out until you get a feel for it?
can you go somewhere and practice your reversing?

I agree unless the road is so narrow that op's car is significantly longer than the length of it? But then op wouldn't have the option to park on the road in front of her house.

Op I live on a Cul de Sac I use to get a neighbours camper van parked opposite my drive, (the gap between edge of my drive and camper van is just enough to get a van through at a push) my dd car would be outside my house (next to drive) and neighbours had a car out side theirs. I found it easier to reverse out than in. But it involved a lot of inching back and forth.

Thankfully council told them to pack it in as an ambulance couldn't gain access if needed.
