Chloe Ayling

I have just finished watching the Chloe Ayling docu drama on BBC.

I was expecting to see some threads about it, due to her terrible treatment on the back of being a non stereotypical female victim, but think this may be the only one?

I found it really hard watching to see the treatment of her from the press. Has anyone else seen it?

Note: for anyone not familiar with the case. She was a young working class glamour model, who was kidnapped and held for days in a remote part of Italy. After she was freed she was accused by the media of making it up for publicity. Mainly due to the fact she didn’t present as a typical victim - she wasn’t visibly upset, wore a low cut top and sold her story.

Very strong lady, instead of highlighting the issue of kidnap and human trafficking she was implicated in her own kidnap, the press were terrible at the time.

Tale as old as time - woman who does not behave in the way a patriarchal society expects is vilified.

When a woman says she’s been abused, believe her.

Yes. Chloe Ayling's kidnappers were jailed for their crimes against her.

Ooo, I didn’t realise there had been any replies as I normally get a notification.

Yes, the story really highlights the treatment of women in the media. Which was both shocking but also sadly not surprising.
I remember at the time wondering if it was fake as the media only seemed to be pushing that narrative, now I am really cross with myself that I took some of the media reports on face value.

I also find the whole set up really confusing. What were the brothers intentions from the kidnap? Why did they return her and then stick around the embassy to be arrested. Such an unusual situation!

I watched it today. Complete victim blaming. Just awful

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/09/2024 00:26

I remember this, the victim blaming and lies were all over the internet.Angry

Most odd.

In one of the programmes I understood Chloe had a child who lived with the child's father.
But that wasn't mentioned again.
Did I get that wrong?
She appeared to live in London with her Mum.

If you look back at old media reports there were also stories about how she had ‘abandoned’ her child for fame and modelling. This also seemed to feed into the theory that as she was obviously an ‘unfit’ mother she must be lying and deserving of no sympathy.
Its such a sad situation that to be a deserving victim you must also be a perceived good character and mother.
