Do you ever get used to the taste of kefir?

I have awful digestive issues and am under the guidance of a dietitian.

Amongst her recommendations she has suggested that I have kefir. I don't tolerate dairy well so am trying a coconut milk version.

The problem is that it tastes rank, as though it has gone bad. I know it is a fermented product and it is supposed to have that weird fizzy taste and texture but my brain can't get past the thought that it has turned and will make me poorly. I remember trying dairy kefir some years ago and feeling the same.

My dietitian says it will really help build my microbiome to healthier levels but tbh I am wondering if a daily probiotic tablet would be more palatable?

HappyHeader · 16/08/2024 20:03

Mmmh… fizzy milk.

HoppityBun · 16/08/2024 20:04

I love water kefir. Coconut anything makes me bilious

No.
I treat it like nasty medicine

I don't drink it, I eat the kefir yoghurt. I've always loved the taste. I remember my mum buying those early live muller yoghurt years ago (90s) and loving that too.

My preference is Biotful quark kefir. I get all my protein, all the gut healthy bacteria and a solid breakfast.

I do find its OK to mix with normal Greek yoghurt which dilutes the taste a bit.

Or you can use it to make overnight oats.

Oooh interesting, I think it’s delicious! My one and three year old do too and are always asking for more. Maybe we’ve got genetically dodgy tastebuds? 😂

pizzaHeart · 16/08/2024 20:09

I tried a few different brands of dairy kefir and some were definitely better then others. So maybe try another brand?

frannygallops · 16/08/2024 20:10

The Yeovalley kefir is delicious

StormingNorman · 16/08/2024 20:11

I love the Biotiful kefir drinks but haven’t tried a coconut milk kefir.

Bubblesallaround · 16/08/2024 20:11

Try making it yourself. I wouldn’t say I love it… but it’s tolerable!

maverickfox · 16/08/2024 20:15

I like kefir and make a milk one. Water kefir is expensive to buy but is delicious but you can make it yourself with the water kefir grains.

Did the dietitian mention kumbucha? It's a dairy free, tea based drink. And fermented like kefir. A more pleasant fizzy drink than fizzy yoghurt...
My local shop sells a really nice cola kombucha amongst other fruity flavours.

threelions · 16/08/2024 20:22

I love Kefir. Biotiful cherry drink is my favorite.

I was going to suggest this too. There's lots of other options that are good for your gut! Plus it's a good idea to just generally increase your fibre intake.

Wahine24 · 16/08/2024 20:47

When I used to have dairy I always preferred polish ones , my mum has a mango one from home bargains
Kombucha is a good choice as previously suggested as is kimchi ( homemade much better than shop bought)

mynameiscalypso · 16/08/2024 21:22

I like drinking-kefir personally but I also buy kefir yoghurts and I find them indistinguishable from normal yoghurt. And my DH can't tell the difference either. But also have a gut health powder, I think it's biomel too, that you can stir into yogurt or porridge. I buy the chocolate one normally.

I have tried several different kumbucha but they all made my gut issues worse, I have SIBO so have to be careful with the amount of probiotic and fermented products.

Thanks everyone, I may try making some kefir water, maybe I’ll find it a little more palatable than the coconut milk versions?

My partner has kefir everyday have you tried to just use it in smoothies ?

Clma · 16/08/2024 22:29

Oh I love it! I didn't realise that people generally don't like it.

Belindabelle · 16/08/2024 22:30

Make your own.

Buy kefir grains.
Follow the instructions
Always double ferment.

Kefir has totally changed my life. No more psoriasis. Poo most days.

VenusClapTrap · 16/08/2024 22:36

I was highly sceptical that kefir and kombucha would do anything for my gut problems, and I found them pretty unpalatable. But they’ve honestly had a huge impact so I’m never dropping them now. I tried lots of brands and types and found several I like now. I also have a ginger or turmeric shot every day. I’m so much better than I was.

Timeisnevertimeatall · 16/08/2024 22:39

I buy the drinking yoghurt ones - I like the raspberry. I don't have it 'neat' , I use it in overnight oats with chia seeds and other bits. Don't know if that cancels out the health benefits of it.

The Polish one I have certainly has a Kick to it! Plain and no sugar added.
As someone posted above - treat it like a shot of medicine. After the shock of the first sip I begin to quite like it! 😂
