Rounded bellies on otherwise slim women

I've always been slim, but with a rounded belly - I remember pushing it out as a child, pretending to be pregnant to impress my friends. This was the late seventies/eighties and I was never called fat or overweight, but always had a belly. As an adult, if I put on weight, it was only ever on my belly. Occasionally people asked me if I was pregnant. Now I'm 53 and menopausal, I've put on more weight around the middle, but not otherwise overweight. I eat healthily and get a reasonable amount of exercise - gym and regular walks.

If you have a body shape like mine, what clothes do you find suit you? I'm conscious of my side profile. I usually find trousers/skirts and loose (but not too long) tops work best - dresses always look like maternity wear.

Also, have you experimented with your diet? I haven't tried giving up dairy or gluten, to see if it helps, but I sometimes think I should give it a go in case I've had a lifelong intolerance without ever realising it.

I have the yoghurt type Keffir, there are other types, but I know nothing about them. (For the dairy free, it might be worth a look)
The amount of Keffir I have varies, but a 500ml bottle will last about 3 days, or I will have one of the smaller bottles each day. (It's not cheap, but for me, so worth it!)
I have a very slow digestion (gastroparesis) which means that food stays in my stomach for a long time, which will cause bloating - Keffir helps shift it through quicker.
I also used to suffer from IBS, which I believe was due to some spectacular bouts of food poisoning I had whilst travelling in some unpleasant places when I was younger.
I have not had a bout of IBS since I started Keffir about 3 years ago.
If you are trying for the first time, I would suggest when you are at home, as for me, it worked quickly - not in a stomach upset sort of way, but speeded things up (sorry, TMI!)
If it works for you, you sort of get used to your ideal consumption, and how long it will take to work.
I noticed my stomach was flatter on the first day, but then I looked as if I were about to have triplets! If I take it every day, I stay flattish (I am past meno, a little over weight, so can never hope for a washboard stomach) you get to know what is bloat, and what is flab! A couple of days without Keffir and I am 'expecting' again.
Feel free to ask anything I have missed.

Do you just have the Kefir on its own? Interested to try this!

Yes, it's just like a drinking yoghurt. I suppose you could put it over cereals or fruit. There is also a Keffir yoghurt, and I have had success with this, too.
I tend to swop my brands regularly, too.
I find The 'brands' a bit better than say M and S, and it is very readily available where I live.
Tentatively is the key, until you know what you are doing!

Interesting. Is there a common ingredient there or are they two separate sensitivities? Oats are a gluten-free cereal, and chick peas are a legume.

I have no idea, it's just what I've noticed! Legumes are known for causing gas I suppose. I think both have high fibre content which is hard to digest?

The "fact "that carbs cause weight gain has been debunked a number of times in proper scientific trials. Most people lose weight when low carbing because they're eating less rather than because of what they're eating. No chips, pasta bread etc means you eat less and replace them with salad etc

It's also difficult to work out how many carbs you're actually eating as it's not just the starchy carbs

This is good news because if I try low carbing I don’t have enough energy to exercise. If eating bread, I only ever have brown bread, which is surely a better choice than white?

Is it hip width, I wonder? Or spine shape? I have a duck-shaped lower back into arse and quite narrow hips for my height.
Even at my slimmest I have a pot belly. Weirdly, it's smaller now than in my 20s, even though everything else is the same. But then, now I can go from mango to football in minutes.

😂” duck shaped lower back into arse” made me spit my tea out ! Me too

You need to get a book on the FODMAP diet. That will explain it all.

I'm skinny with a belly. I've got basically what they call an apple shape.
I tend to favour low waisted trousers, long tops, definitely nothing cinching the waist. Long trousers, never ankle swingers!
Basically anything to lengthen the torso.
If you like your legs then wear short skirts or shorts with slightly oversized t shirts?

Deftandglory · 18/08/2024 15:28

Only time I lost weight from from my tummy was low carbing. Every other diet and I would lose weight overall but kept my apple shape.

Best outfits I find are something that enhance shoulders and bust - round scoop neck and cap sleeves and bottoms that balance out. So lower rise,hip/ thigh skimming and a bit flared from then on.

peanutbutter789 · 18/08/2024 15:57

I have an apple shape/no natural waist. I bloat as the day goes on and no amount of dietary adjustments have ever changed that.

The thing that helped me the most was doing weights at the gym working on developing thighs/glutes/posterior chain. It helps me look more balanced rather than stick legs with a belly, I don't think my tummy is any smaller but the proportions look better.

Clothing-wise, fit and flare dresses or leggings/slim fit trousers with top that is loose/skimming fit.
