Smoking

I gave up smoking 17 years ago. I still get cravings sometimes. I would love a cigarette right now. Is this normal? Am assuming it is as you hear about alcoholics relapsing after 20 years of not drinking, and that’s the nature of addiction.

If it helps you stay strong, cheapest (really cheap, nasty) cigarettes are now nearly £13 a packet 😩

Try nearly £16. How does anyone afford to smoke these days???

I feel the same way, gave up 27 years ago but I could happily light up now. If I watch a film where people are smoking I instinctively inhale and reminisce about how much I enjoyed it. It sounds awful but if I was unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with a terminal illness I'd probably start smoking again.

Remember the stinking clothes and when you smell stale smoke on other people .. 🤮.

Hurdygurdygirl · 15/08/2024 21:31

It's 12 years since I gave up and when I am stressed I really want a cigarette. It took several years after quitting before I got to the stage of only occasionally fancying a cigarette.

Ex smoker going on 20 years here too. I don't have cravings as such, but love a wee proper smell of cigarette smoke when walking past a smoker.

I also for a fact know I could pick one up and restart just like that, even without cravings or the urge to have a smoke.

Same OP. It’s not a craving for me, it’s nostalgia.

20 years ago I was a social smoker (not any better) but meaning I might not smoke during the week regularly if at all but have happily (foolishly) smoked 20+ on a big night out. What I ‘crave’ is the night out, not the cigarette.

I’ve had maybe 5 cigs in 20 years. The lighting up, holding it in my hand etc. is great, the inhale instantly made me want to visit.

Stay 💪

24 years for me and I regularly dream that I smoked and wake up full of regret!

LateMumma · 15/08/2024 22:11

20 years here and I still get people to blow their cigarette smoke at me when I've had a drink

SmallGreenBabies · 15/08/2024 22:15

Same here OP! I also gave up 17 years ago - 1st July 2007, the day of the indoor smoking ban. You too? I now smoke about one cigarette every 2 years on average 😆

SmallestMan · 15/08/2024 22:31

I gave up because I was a single mum to a young child and just felt a huge amount of guilt worrying about what would happen to my DD if I got a smoking related illness. Am def not going to give in to the urge tonight, just find it crazy that the cravings can strike still so many years later.

I gave up 17 years ago when I had a chest infection so badly that I felt the Grim Reaper would take me off if I lit another cigarette. I really did feel I'd die right then if I lit up. It's the nature of addiction that at the same time I wanted a cigarette. Haven't had one since. Now, if I see people smoking in old films it makes me feel a bit queasy and I have to look away. And yes, I still fancy one occasionally. I wouldn't dare though, I'd be straight back on 20 a day. The cost!
