If I could turn back time - Cher

Joolsin · 15/08/2024 20:31

Toto - Africa
Roxy Music - Angel Eyes (not strictly a power ballad, but amazing on a sunny day in a convertible!)

xsquared · 15/08/2024 21:25

I also immediately thought of Alone by Heart, but I am amazed that no one has mentioned Kate Bush yet.

Babushka is a belter.

FinanceLPlates · 15/08/2024 22:08

Black velvet - Alannah Myles
Maria - Blondie
99 Luftballons - Nena
9 to 5 - Dolly Parton
You’re so vain - Carly Simon
Kids in America - Kim Wilde
Walk like an Egyptian - Bangles

Not sure they all count as power ballads strictly speaking, but all great to sing along to at full pelt!

Oh and of course Girls just wanna have fun! - Cyndi Lauper

DandelionDahlia · 16/08/2024 07:30

Really appreciate PP reminding me of some absolute classics that I’d forgotten.
I’d add:
Breathe Again - Toni Braxton
Some more Roxette, probably Listen to your heart and Spending my time
More Bon Jovi, maybe Livin’ on a prayer
Aerosmith, probably Cryin’ and Crazy.
Sounds like an epic roadtrip :)

DoopSnoggySnogg · 16/08/2024 13:47

I just wanted to say that Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo is a great modern power ballad. Nothing better than screaming along to “coz I still fucking LOVE you babe, OOOOOH OOOOOH” at top volume in the car.

JackJarvisEsq · 16/08/2024 13:53

Stop by Sam Brown
2 out of 3 ain’t bad by Meatloaf

JackJarvisEsq · 16/08/2024 13:54

Oh and See the Day by Dee C Lee

MissBridgetJones · 16/08/2024 16:18

If someone cares to compile this on a Spotify playlist called 'Mumsnet Power Bangers: Road trip addition' I'd be ever so grateful 🙏🏻

Question - Is Dire Straits 'Romeo & Juliet' considered a power ballad?

(I don't care as I love it so it's going on, but sister is saying it's not!)

It most bloody, definitely is.

Snowpaw · 16/08/2024 16:24

Boston - More than a Feeling

Trox · 16/08/2024 16:34

I think the true hallmark of a good power ballad is at least one key change, just before the end.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 16/08/2024 16:42

Is this love by Whitesnake for the video alone !

shellyleppard · 16/08/2024 16:45

Bon Jovi : its my life/always Def leppard : animal/let's get rocked/rocket elbow : grounds for divorce/neat little rows ❤️❤️❤️

xsquared · 19/08/2024 23:44

I thought of another one that also belongs in the lesser known 80s thread.

First Time - Robin Beck, which was the theme tune to the Coca Cola advert.

charabang · 20/08/2024 00:00

Steel house- She's Gone
Quarterflash - Harden my Heart
Patti Smith- Because the Night

Bobje · 20/08/2024 00:36

Thanks for these great suggestions everyone 😀

The siblings road trip is an annual thing.
No other halfs and no kids, just the 4 of us reconnecting and having a good old catch up and amazing food!
This year we are heading up to Northumberland from the south east, hence the mega playlist requirement.

@xsquared That is one of my faves and actually has sibling connections as it's a song 15 Yr old me listened to all the time on my Sony Walkman travelling on a coach to visit my big brother when he was at uni!
