Honestly how messy is your house right now?

Ok anyone else struggling to keep the house tidy on the school holidays? The worst part is our kitchen with the island-loads of family crap on top of it! including books and work from school but can’t bring myself to bin ot just yet. The kids bedrooms are also pretty messy.
ok how bad is your house?

Honestly? It looks like the aftermath of an explosion at a car boot sale. It feels like I spend my life cleaning and tidying but it’s always a tip (I don’t BTW, it just feels like it because I hate housework). I’m trying to get on top of it as it’s depressing me and makes life harder, plus makes more work. I have had some good tips on Mumsnet that I am trying to put into practice. Not being able to afford a cleaner any more has made a big, unwelcome, difference!

bonzaitree · 14/08/2024 22:38

moved in in May- boxes everywhere still 🙈

Tralalaka · 14/08/2024 22:41

Absolutely fine. All bedrooms tidy, all downstairs tidy but there is a pan and a colander in the sink. I can’t live in mess

TurkishDartboard · 14/08/2024 22:48

It’s a semi-renovated wreck, like something from the set of The Money Pit. I’m fine with that.

HotPotato123 · 14/08/2024 22:49

My kids went back today (Scotland) yippee, I gutted the house and took 6 (!!) bags of rubbish to the dump!

Titsywoo · 14/08/2024 22:53

Pretty tidy although certainly not perfect. However my kids are late teens and both working at the moment (until Sept for DD when she goes back to uni) so less mess in the common areas (their rooms are a different matter!).

MightyGoldBear · 14/08/2024 22:53

It looks like it's been burgled during the day but once the youngest two are in bed, my eldest his dad and I tidy up. Could definitely do with a declutter of toys but we have a billion kallaxes so everything has a place to go. I tell myself as they get older they will have a lot less stuff.

Just pleased to survive the holidays if I'm honest. Really trying to instill a everyone pitches in mentality to the children. The eldest two at 9 and 6 are really starting to get on board which has made life much easier.

Makes me laugh when they exclaim what hard work it is keeping the house tidy when the two year old undoes anything they tidy 🤣

eggandchip · 14/08/2024 23:01

My home is spotless but then i am an extreme minimalist.

stayathomer · 14/08/2024 23:05

It’s too clean as we have visitors. I’m so tired of keeping it clean. I move things the second they appear to show the possibility of causing a mess. I’m sweeping, mopping, hiding, tidying etc etc while stopping the dog getting too hyper. I’m so tired😅😅😅

mathanxiety · 14/08/2024 23:05

I've spent the afternoon trying to whip it into shape. It's hot and humid here, though, and I haven't made much headway. I shouldn't have sat and watched endless Olympic beach volleyball matches.

PickAChew · 14/08/2024 23:22

It looks very much lived in. The room I'm in is an actual fucking tip but it's the one that DH works in. He can't even put his shoes down as a pair when he takes them off. With him and two autistic adult DS, one severe, I stick with keeping the spaces I seem to have been allocated (ie the bloody kitchen diner) as tidy as possible. Even then, it's a constant battle to get the relevant man to claim back their electronic device from the square metre of pristine work space that I've created before it gets used as a chopping board.

DH does actually do a fair bit of housework, he just does it badly and is so disorganised.

Newbie8918 · 14/08/2024 23:30

horrendous currently.

In the middle of renovations. some rooms back to bare brick, plaster dust everywhere, no kitchen for 14 weeks, so using an airfryer in the bedroom. Holes in the walls from a rewire. Washing dishes in the bath 🤣

A low for me was when i got in the bath after pulling a wall down, only to realise that the water smelled of bacon because DH had washed the Ninja and hadnt bleached the bath.......so yeah 🙈

KohlaParasaurus · 14/08/2024 23:47

It's not bad, but you can tell that it's inhabited.

Downstairs is fine. Bathroom and our bedroom also fine. The kids bedrooms.... look like we've been burgled

PuffinLord · 15/08/2024 08:24

The actual cooking/food prep area of the kitchen is clean and tidy. The bathrooms are clean.

Everything else is pure chaos. My kids decided to build a gigantic Lego/magnets/wooden blocks city and populate it with all their toy animals, so it’s difficult to even walk around the house.

Positivenancy · 15/08/2024 08:24

Mine is fine apart from the kids beds being unmade and my dd’s room being a tad messy.
I do need to hoover, but I’m working from home today so the washing machine is on for the second time already this morning 🙌 and the dryer is on because it’s miserable outside.
But to be fair, I’ve been at work all week and the kids have been at sports club.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/08/2024 08:36

Downstairs is presentable. Upstairs is a pre-holiday car crash.

Newbie8918 · 15/08/2024 08:40

@bonzaitree honestly. When you haven't put your washing away or hoovered, console yourself with the fact that your hair doesn't smell like pig fat 🤣

House fairly tidy but I’m a teacher so got time off to keep on top of it. Hats off to anyone with children off and trying to keep on top of the house.

My biggest problem are the cupboards. I need to empty them and sort but trying to make the most of being with my friends children and making a start on schoolwork.

I am formally forbidding you from cleaning out your cupboards in the school holidays.

This is an activity for a rainy Sunday in October. Don't you dare do it!
