Things to do near Saltburn on Sea / North Yorkshire

Staying in a cottage near Saltburn next week, we have never been to the area before so it's all new to us. Me, DH and 17-year-old ds who has autism and severe learning difficulties, he likes charity shops and car boot sales!
We haven't planned anything but would like a few days out, somewhere to wander about and have a pub lunch. Ds is ok with short visits to museums etc but doesn't like to be anywhere too long.

All suggestions appreciated.

Ooh, love Saltburn! Such a shame about the Cliff Lift - it seems to be out of action more than it's working, but it is very old. There is a woodland path with a gentler, much more gradual walk down to the promenade (starts by the railway bridge), but still quite rugged and potentially a bit challenging.

Kirkleatham Museum is a great place with things to interest all ages: https://redcarcleveland.co.uk/enjoy/kirkleatham-museum/

There's only one car park at beach level that you can use all day. The one next to the beach is very short stay only. It's quite a decent size and the price isn't too bad, but the 'standard' spaces fill up very quickly - if you get there after about 9-ish, you're unlikely to get anywhere for the rest of the day - but I don't know if this is the same for the blue badge spaces.

There are beach huts available to hire on a daily basis, if this is something you might find helpful. They're not cheap, but depending on your needs and preferences, they can be very worthwhile. We've used them before as a 'base' when holidaying with an elderly, disabled family member for a beach day, where you can have a sit down, cup of tea, change for the beach, have a bit of private/hideaway time away from the crowds, charge your phone etc., as well as 'claiming' a part of the prom to sit out (they come with deck chairs) It's advised to book these online in advance.

One other thing we noticed about Saltburn was that most of the places to eat out or get takeaways seemed to close rather early - apart from the (very good) Chinese takeaway.

Kirkleatham Museum - Enjoy

Kirkleatham Museum is the local heritage museum for the borough of Redcar and Cleveland.

Whitby is generally fine, even when busy, so long as you get there early. There’s plenty of parking available, it’s just spread out around the town.

Not my experience at all and I've been there a lot, both very early (7am-ish) and later

HauntedbyMagpies · 14/08/2024 19:17

It really annoys me that N Yorks council charge for blue badge holders in their car parks at the coast. Those of us who are disabled (adults or children) often cannot use public transport! In which case we're left with no choice but to use the car.
It's odd because N Yorkshire council don't charge bb holders elsewhere in the county. They certainly don't in my N Yorks town, anyway

The cliff lift had a fire so it'll take a while to repair.

You could also have a drive out onto the North Yorks moors. Beautiful part of the world. Maybe pop into Goathland.

Diplidocus4 · 14/08/2024 20:58

Do you like sea glass ? As in collecting ?

Lds1 · 14/08/2024 21:08

I started writing this earlier tonight so it's probably been all covered now.

There's a few charity shops in Saltburn. There's a leisure centre too if you wanted a swim/gym. As well as the beach and sea front prom.

In Skelton there is mini golf called Holey Molies, it has a bar and does food too.

Ironstone mining museum in Skinningrove and there is also a bar that does nice food next door called Kaskane (it's closed on Sundays, you might want to make a booking too as it's often busy). Skinningrove also has a nice beach.

Staithes is a fishing village with a nice bay

Whitby will be busy, it has plenty of charity shops and independent shops. There's the Dracula experience, Whitby abbey, arcades, plenty of fish and chips!

There is Kirkleathem museum and there is also an Owl Centre there too.

Redcar has some arcades, long beach, charity shops, there is a car boot there too at the race course. There's also a lifeboat museum. Pacittos is the ice cream shop which is very popular.

If anyone likes football you could probably do a tour of the Riverside Stadium

There's loads of walking routes, Roseberry Topping is popular.

Ormesby Hall is National Trust

Pickering further out but has steam trains

motherofawhirlwind · 14/08/2024 21:26

Whitby - park and ride, or park up by the Abbey. The YHA has a tea room so you can stay up that end if the town looks to be heaving. Trenchers is the best chip restaurant, has GF batter available. Magpie is rubbish.

Sandsend - much quieter for beach, and dogs allowed on some sections. Park at the north end car park, under the arch. As long as you're there by 10, you should get a space ok. Sandsend Cafe is great and the outside decks are pretty protective so if the weather isn't perfect, you can still sit out.

Goathland - good for steam trains and Hogsmeade. There's a nice circular walk from opposite the garage or walk to Grosmont and stop off at the Beck Hole pub. Or the last tea room (Goathland Tea Rooms) is lovely with a big garden and good GF options.

I’ve been going there my whole life and driving myself there for the last 34 years, not once have I struggled to find a parking space.

Yeah, it's really sad. The photos looked like it spread a long way.

It seems like fires aren't uncommon there - I'm presuming that the very old mechanism/electrics make it more susceptible to catching fire, but maybe it's not that to blame or they're just very unlucky?

Cuwins · 15/08/2024 11:07

If your happy to drive a bit further what about Beamish? A museum but not an average one- lots of space to walk around, buses/trams etc to ride on.
Can't remember the name but we went to a lovely RSPB place in Middlesbrough.

I think the RSPB place is Saltholme.

Childfreefriedbread · 15/08/2024 11:15

I was going to suggest Dalby Forest but maps shows it is over an hours drive away so depends how far you want to travel. I've not been but Filey Bird and Animal Park looks good. Falling Foss water fall is nice. Or as a PP said, Goathland and Mallyan Spout.

Cuwins · 15/08/2024 11:18

@boobybum that's the one

NorthernHoliday · 15/08/2024 11:23

Thanks for all your fab tips so far, it's so much nicer to get personal recommendations. DS loves lifeboats so we will definitely visit the lifeboat museum.

Not really something to 'do' as such, but if he's interested in lifeboats and the sea-going history of coastal towns, this is a quirky and interesting (albeit obviously sad) historical feature of Saltburn to look out for.
