Urgent help needed - gift

If you’re invited to someone’s house for food and want to take a gift, what would you take?

I’m ND, and want to make an effort, but am utterly clueless.

If I take a “good” bottle of wine, what is considered “decent”, how much should I spend?

Thank you all soooooo much in advance.

Nice chocs or flowers always good- not sure on wine.

HollyGolightly4 · 13/08/2024 21:42

Flowers (a reasonably nice bunch- maybe £6- £12 depending on your local supermarket)and a bottle of prosecco usually ticks the boxes.

Sparrowball · 13/08/2024 21:42

Some dessert or a cake, otherwise wine, flower or chocolates. Don't overthink it.

xyz111 · 13/08/2024 21:48

Only take wine if you're sure they drink. I don't drink alcohol and it annoys me when people buy me wine who know I don't drink.

Kendodd · 13/08/2024 21:48

Ask them if you can bring anything, you could suggest a dessert or drinks. Don't just bring a dessert or other such food without the host asking you to/knowing you're bringing it. Wine is always good to bring and will be enough.

Good point.

Do you drink wine? Just take your favourite.
Don't drink wine? Take your favourite non alcoholic drink (but slightly fancier than Pepsi).
Or chocolates.
Also - as said above only take alcohol if you know for certain they drink alcohol.

Flowers are lovely but a bit pesky if you are hosting and then have to start faffing about with vases, etc. suggest a nice small rose or orchid or something similar in a pot. Waitrose and other supermarkets have a good range. Other than that, a box of Bendicks Mints or nice truffle chocs - aim to spend around £8 on a box of chocs and go for good quality, ie, not a box of Celebrations or Lindor.

Comedycook · 13/08/2024 21:58

I'd take a wine and probably spend £10-12 on a bottle. I don't drink so often take a nice bottle of juice/smoothie with me.

Otherwise chocolates or flowers. Last meal I was invited to, I took a posh box of brownies.

VenusClapTrap · 13/08/2024 21:58

I take flowers, fancy after dinner mints or some really good cheese & crackers.

Good point.

Yep really annoys me if people that know that and still do. Even got handed a bottle with "I know u don't drink but I got u this, you can regift it if you like"

Needmorelego · 13/08/2024 22:03

@Destiny123 I'd have handed it straight back then saying "Oh well ....here you go. A gift of some wine. Personally I don't drink it so I'm having to regift this" 😂

AdaColeman · 13/08/2024 22:05

Flowers, a nice mid range bunch from the supermarket will be fine, if you can afford something else as well, a small box of Belgian chocolates, again from the supermarket, would be lovely.

I definitely wouldn't take a cake or dessert unless I'd been asked by the hostess to provide a pudding. Don't take wine unless you know your hosts very well and know a bit about wine too, as giving wine can be a minefield!

Motherrr · 13/08/2024 22:12

People usually appreciate just being asked if the guest can bring anything. Even if they say no, bring wine/chocolates/flowers... personally I find flowers a bit faffy to deal with (vase, then disposing of them afterwards) but would always think it was a lovely thought if I was given them

Whenthesilenceisntquiet · 13/08/2024 22:17

Thank you for all the responses!

They are not teetotal, so I might go for wine, maybe Prosecco, I like that suggestion.

An orchid sounds like a good idea too.
