How many nappies do you go through with a newborn and different stages?

Trying to work out nappy costs and whether to go for the cheapest possible or something more like peachies?
Any nappy brands recommended or to avoid?

Pampers? Kit&Kin? How do you choose?

I have a 10 week old. I tried to keep track in the first couple of weeks, but it just got overwhelming the rate he went through them!

So far I've learned to make sure whatever you go for is something you can get easily and to not overstock on a particular size as he grew so quickly. It will also depend on your baby. Brands are shaped and sized differently. Asda and Lidl own brand ones suit baby's body shape the best. Pampers were a bit too square and leaked.

Not a definitive answer, sorry! It took us some trial and error to find the right ones.

I did a bit of a mix. Pampers early on, because can’t be bothered experimenting during with different brands during the newborn fog. Then when they were a bit bigger I’d generally bulk buy the amazon own brand but also sometimes chuck whatever was on offer in the shopping trolley if I needed them sooner. But generally stuck with pampers active fit for overnight once they were sleeping through (12 hours) as we sometimes had leaks with other brands.

And honestly can’t remember how many a newborn gets through! It’s such a blur! Maybe 6 a day for an older baby though?

Cantgetausername87 · 13/08/2024 13:31

Don't know numbers because you lose count pretty quick! I used aldis own from newborn and most parents I know did too! Don't know how anyone could afford pampers I'm sure they're about £9 a pack

Babyboomtastic · 13/08/2024 13:41

There'll be times when it's 3-4, hours. There we be other times when you can get through 3 in 15m 😂

You don't need to change them after every spot of wee, but you do after a poo. How much babies poo varies from 10 times a day to once in 10 days.

I'd assume about 10 a day in the early months. That will decrease over time.

For various reasons my 5yo is in nappies during the night and I get through anywhere from 1-4 (most often 2) a night plus one for a daytime nap.

I've never had an issue with supermarket brands, though sometimes got a pack of pampers where I wanted to travel light as they are thinner.

I currently like the rascal and co from Tesco. Their are nicer quality than their more basic own brand but still not expensive.

So I guess it’s just try different ones when they are here for fit?? I feel like I need properly telling what to do 😂 We have a Lidl nearby so will try them

If price was no option, what would be the best nappy/kindest to skin? Are pampers worth the extra price?

Loads in the newborn stage with one of mine who seemed to poo about every 5 mins, the other not so many. So the amount you use may depend on your baby. In terms of brand, nappy shape varies between brand so you might find some fit better than others. For that reason I wouldn't really bulk buy. Basically like most things with a new baby, you can't really plan!

OKbutwhyplease · 13/08/2024 14:07

My daughter used the Asda ones when she was in tabby nappies for no reason other than that's where we happened to shop at the time but then leaked a lot more in their pull ups so we prefer pampers pull ups and shop around for the best price and bulk buy if necessary which were fortunate to have the spare cash and space to store if I can't get a deal were Tesco her grandma still prefers tabby ones and I pick them up from wherever.
I probably change her four or five times a day grandma a lot more.

Cobblersorchard · 13/08/2024 14:10

Reusables all the way. Cheaper in the long run, a million times more absorbent, better for skin and the environment. Also makes
potty training easier.

All the disposables are equally bad, we used them only in hospital and dire emergencies. Ditto wipes. We still use our old cloth wipes for other things and DD is almost 5.

nanoghost · 13/08/2024 14:57

We just used pampers and stuck with them ever since. They're more
expensive but so far my 4 month old has never had nappy rash and has only had a handful of poo explosions. We tend to just look for where they're on offer and stock up. They also had nappies in size 0 which we needed for a few weeks when she was born.

I would suggest getting a couple packs of size 0 and 1 and see what you like. Also have a look at what's available locally to you.

Shesellsseashellsontheseasure · 13/08/2024 14:59

My first born leaked out of Pampers, but didn't with Tesco ones. He was long and skinny! My second is much chunkier and all brands seem to fit ok.

Pretty sure as a newborn it was like 12-20 a day depending on the baby. As they get older (e.g. 6 months old) probably around 8-10 a day. Only around 6 a day now at 15 months unless he's having a super poopy day 😂

JumpinJellyfish · 13/08/2024 15:05

I used reusable wipes for both kids and think they are fantastic.

But reusable nappies were a nightmare - they leaked and gave them both nappy rash. Both were potty trained at 18 months and I don’t think would have been trained earlier if they’d been in reusable nappies.

I used pampers throughout for both kids and found they fitted well, were extremely absorbent and never leaked. I didn’t actually try any other brands but have heard that the Lidl own brand ones are good too. I wouldn’t recommend bulk buying though as you don’t know when your child is going to grow into the next size and anything you might save in discounts you’ll probably waste by overbuying.

mrsed1987 · 13/08/2024 15:10

I've got a 4 month old and so far I've tried

Aldi
Lidl
Sainsburies own
Tesco own
Pampers

I've found that sadly pampers is the best fit lol. It also seems to absorb better.

I may try again in bigger sizes as would rather pay less obviously!

NomenNudum · 13/08/2024 15:14

Washables you can often pick up cheap second hand and they have decent resale value.

Pampers are rubbish too! I and don't get me started on their wet wipes, not only do they contain plastic, but they are the least effective wet wipe for cleaning dirty nappies.

Aldi nappies with water wipes to start, and the at around 10 months we switched to Tesco's own baby wipes.

Depends on child. We have 3 kids and different brands fitted their bums.

SplishSplashSploshes · 13/08/2024 15:22

My first had wet nappy sensetivity for the first 7 weeks, we went through around 20 to 25 a day in the first couple of weeks. Second however couldn't have cared less about being wet so more like 10 a day.

I was happy with lidl for the price, despite not being great, but they've recently changed the design and they're so much worse. So avoid lidl.

MaverickSnoopy · 13/08/2024 15:22

It really varies from baby to baby and bf babies tend to poo more than ff - but again that's not a hard and fast rule.

With our first time, we stocked up and then didn't get through them all. With our others, we just got a few packs and then purchased as we went along, largely when they were on offer. I did put money aside in advance though to help cushion the blow. For us , e used between 6-14 nappies a day with our babies.

SouthLondonMum22 · 13/08/2024 15:31

I have 3 under 2. Pampers has been great for us, DS is 20 months and potty trained at 18 months in a week with no issues.

Twin DD’s are nearly 4 months and Pampers are working great for them too so far. Worth the money for us.

mitogoshi · 13/08/2024 15:32

I got through 2 packs of the newborn size then switch to cloth - 24 cotton prefolds and 4 wraps, the prefolds last throughout but I bought the wraps for each size. Sold everything on recouping cost and some!

Devilsmommy · 13/08/2024 15:36

Mine has always had Pampers. They're usually on offer somewhere and I've never paid full price for a pack in 23 months😊 also if you scan the code from the pack you get points which gets money off

OlympicBlue · 13/08/2024 13:53

Think it’s baby dependent as different body shapes fit different brands better. Also Pampers isn’t a universal type- they have tons of different product lines. We had leaks overnight with their tabbed baby dry but never with active fit pants 🤷‍♀️ Not sure about sensitivity, mine only ever had nappy rash with the grim results of cutting the 1 year molars 🤢 I don’t know how common it is to react to nappies differently, I’m sure it’s a thing for some but anecdotally all of the babies I know that suffered from bad rashes when they were tiny, so it wasn’t teething related, ended up eventually being diagnosed with a milk allergy so the nappy brand was neither here nor there.

OlympicBlue · 14/08/2024 12:02

Thanks all, really useful. Unfortunately for us reusable nappies aren’t an option so going to have to be disposables, but will be using the reusable wipes not wet wipes. Think will get a few packs of the peaches and some Huggies type in small/newborn and then go from there
