Anyone else hate tomatoes.

I’ve tried so hard to like them. I hated them as a child, tolerated them as a student and young person in spag bols or chillis but now l hate them again.

Im 60. It seems every healthy diet contains vast amounts of tomatoes. They make my stomach turn.

Im not al all a fussy eater, but the hassle of finding food without tomatoes feels like a single handed fight against the fuckers.

I’ll eat anything else ( except tripe and sprouts and cauliflower)

I love tomatoes! Tomato and onion salad is one of my faves. Do you mean you also don’t eat tinned tomatoes and tomato things like curry and pizza? That would be really restrictive!!!

LaraThot · 12/08/2024 19:37

Try frying or roasting to make them sweeter. They're delicious.

AquaFurball · 12/08/2024 19:37

They are in so many recipes! I am allergic to several components of healthy eating though including tomatoes, onions and aubergines and a vinegar sensitivity.

Luckily I love sprouts and cauliflower.

I’ve tried roasting them,

Theyre just evil tomatoes by another name.

No, I’m not keen on them either. I can tolerate if there’s something like mince in to absorb it all, but can’t eat vegetarian ones with tomato sauce.

It’s fairly easy to substitute other things for tomatoes if you cook your own food - bell peppers, aubergines, okra etc all make good sauce bases to replace traditional tomato-based ragus.

Where are you specifically struggling to avoid tomatoes? Others may be able to suggest alternative recipes.

GoldThumb · 12/08/2024 19:51

I like them cooked.
Raw though? No, devils work

I don’t like the taste. Bitter. Even when they are sweet, they’re an underlying bitterness that l just don’t like.

I had some tomatoes in Greece last week. Unbelievable! Tasted so different to the ones in this country... incomparable.

TheGriffle · 12/08/2024 19:58

I used to hate raw tomatoes (I’m fine with cooked, tinned etc) until we grew our own cherry tomatoes when we moved to a house with a greenhouse. Now I pop them like grapes this time of year, they’re delicious. Horrible cold mealy shop bought tomatoes though, no thank you.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/08/2024 20:20

I can just about tolerate sweet raw ones, it’s things in tomato sauce l don’t like.

I hate crap tomatoes. Which they mostly are here

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 12/08/2024 20:29

Hate them. Love tomato soup/ketchup and pasta sauce.

grumpygallbladder · 12/08/2024 20:37

I love love love tomatoes. My dads ones grown on his allotment eaten warm straight from his greenhouse are one of my very favourite things. He grows the best tomatoes ever

YesItsMe44 · 12/08/2024 20:48

I have had a love/hate relationship with them for years. In my teens I had fresh picked heirloom tomatoes and it was like eating candy. I've never had one like it since. I also was told removing the seeds/liquid helps depending on how I'm using them, i.e., like salads as I dislike wet and soggy salads. When I started to cook more in my late 20s I learned each type of tomato has a "purpose" and flavor. Now it depends on how my heartburn is as they're quite acidic. I agree they are a part of many healthy eating plans. I have noticed if I'm eating health the side effects of some food, like acidity, are less.

I'll have your tomatoes if you don't want them! I absolutely love tomatoes. I eat them every day. I think if I were told I could only eat one food from now on, I would choose tomatoes. I will never tire of them.
My father had a greenhouse and used to grow tomatoes in it every summer. I still remember the smell of the ripening fruit and the amazing burst of flavour when we ate the first ones of the season. There's nothing like a fresh, vine-ripened tomato, eaten within minutes of being picked.

I'm just off to eat a tomato - or six. 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅 😋

BobbyBiscuits · 12/08/2024 21:02

I can just about cope with them on a sauce like chilli, but I would never choose a meal like that.
I despise raw tomatoes. The pips in the middle being the worst bit. When it's in a sandwich and soaks into the bread...arghh!!
There's too many textures and variables when you eat it, like you can never be sure what to expect! Sneaky freaky round red fuckers!!

LuluBlakey1 · 12/08/2024 21:02

I love them- raw, in sauces, fried, stewed, roasted, sun-dried, in salads, in sandwiches, on pizzas- however they come.

Mespher · 12/08/2024 21:06

We grow Sungold tomatoes and they are very nice, I don't like the supermarket salad tomatoes though
