Crumble - best way to make it lovely and golden?

Often my crumble seems too fine, and doesn't turn a lovely golden colour. Do I need more butter? Additional ingredients?

I've just used butter sugar and flour.

I use wholewheat flour which is a bit coarser with some of the wheat germ (?) in it. You could also add porridge oats or bashed up biscuits for texture. Ginger biscuits I the topping of an apple or pear crumble is lush.

I made this recently. You cook the crumble top separately for as long as it needs to go golden. it was v nice www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/apple-blackberry-crumble

I do like more crumble than most recipes call for. Maybe that's the problem

Darker sugar? Cook for longer? Deeper crust?

Sprinkle demerara sugar on the top before it goes on the oven.

Cook the crumble topping on a baking tray in the oven until it's turning golden. Then sprinkle it on top of the filling before cooking the whole thing together.

Melted butter - that's the key to a fabulously crunchy crumble. And it is so easy to make!

Use the ratio 100/50/40 - flour, butter sugar, quantity depends on the size of your crumble (and the thickness of topping 😁).

So if you use 200g flour, first stir 80g sugar through the flour. Then melt 100g butter in the microwave or on a hob, pour it over the flour / sugar mix and stir to mix through, getting rid of all the powder and distributing it so the topping has small lumps. Use a bit of a chopping action with your spoon to break up the lumps. Pop it on top of your fruit and bake until it smells! About 50mins.

Like previous posters, I cook to topping separate so it's all crispy. Also add oats to the mix.
