Ear piercing and healing

After some advice for my daughter. She is going to be 14 tomorrow and I was going to get her ears pierced as part of her birthday as requested by her. But her school doesn't allow any earrings of any sort and her friends take out their earrings for school and put them in when they get home. On the ear piercing websites, they recommend leaving in the piercing jewellery till the ears are fully healed, which can take up to 6 months as the hole might close up. Any advice on this and is it true that it could close up if she doesn't wear it during the day? Thanks

After a fresh piercing you shouldn't be taking them out/putting them back in everyday, it will irritate the piercing and cause possible infection. You need to leave them for as long as you can for them to heal, which includes touching/twisting/playing with them. This comes from someone who has nearly 20 piercings.

Yes. My dd's closed up overnight the first time she took them out having left them in for much longer than the 6 weeks . She was so gutted. You can get little clear things to put in but it's a shame you couldn't have looked ahead and done them in the first week of the holidays. A
Most schools allow kids to put plasters over too..it looks shit but it's safer for PE etc.

Sounds like even if we'd done it at the beginning of the holidays it wouldn't be enough time if your DD's ears closed up after having them in for more than 6 weeks @BibbleandSqwauk

Thanks for the advice, I think we'll leave it for now, doesn't sound like it's worth doing before she goes to 6th form now! She'd like to have them done, but not desperate, so she'll be fine.
